Location matters. 🧬📍 A beautiful start to #ESSB2026 in Sitges/Barcelona today, bringing together >700 scientists around this year’s theme: “Painting a New Biology.” Spatial biology has transformed our ability to map biological systems by adding something fundamental: where things happen. In my intro keynote, “Closing the loop: from single-cell perturbations to spatial interventions,” I looked at what I think is the next step. We are becoming remarkably good at mapping biological states. Can we move from mapping to predicting what happens when we intervene, and ultimately to steering biology toward a desired state? I discussed our journey from cellular and spatial atlases and foundation models, through perturbation models and biological world models, to LabCompass, where generative inverse design and experiments are brought together in a closed loop. And spatial biology makes the challenge even more interesting: perturbation space already explodes across dose, time and biological context. Once spatial context and cellular interactions matter too, we will never measure everything. That makes learning in the loop with experiments increasingly important. Wonderful introduction by the ESSB founders and hosts, and a beautiful setting here in Sitges 🌊. Looking forward to the discussions! #SpatialBiology #VirtualCell

The ARDD almost always sells out but this year is very special - it is the first year we are doing it in Boston. Honestly, I am very nervous as the level of the event is the highest we've ever had with multiple pharma CEOs, top policy makers, cream of the crop scientists, pretty much all the startups in longevity biotech, and the largest investment houses under one roof. The venue is also new - it is the newly-constructed mega campus next to the Harvard Business School. All we need now is good weather - Boston, don't fail us! agingpharma.org/program2026

Excited to share AutoScreen, the last piece of my thesis work and an AI co-scientist system for target discovery! I started this in 2024 after CRISPR-GPT. Having spent a lot of time working with CRISPR screens, I saw opportunities for agents to speed up the work of deciding which genes to test. We built agents for literature research, data curation and information synthesis to prioritize screen hits and suggest starting gene libraries. We also wanted to look beyond the familiar genes that tend to dominate these searches. Really glad to see the work continue through multiple cancer immunology experiments in my mentor Le Cong’s lab. AutoScreen helped prioritize genes whose activation was then shown to increase cancer cells’ resistance to immune-cell killing. AutoScreen was an early attempt to put agents to work alongside scientists in target discovery. We wanted to make the process faster and improve the quality of target selection, helping researchers pick out real biological hits from noisy experimental data. Thank you to my mentor, Professor @lecong , Professor @MengdiWang10 , and our co-authors Xuefeng Liu, Xiaotong Wang, Meitong Chen, Xiao Luo, Luna Lyu, Ming Yin, and the rest of the team. Special thanks to the teammates who drove the wet-lab validation and took this work further. Blog: phylo.bio/blog/autoscreen Paper: phylo.bio/papers/autoscreen.…

Join us at the MIT Media Lab for the ScienceClaw Hackathon, building the internet of agents for science. AI is becoming a collaborator in the real world - designing materials, creating instruments, running experiments, and connecting its capabilities with those of other agents. AI adapts as a problem unfolds - revising its reasoning, learning how to collaborate, and assembling scattered pieces of knowledge, evidence, and raw capability into solutions to some of the hardest challenges in science, technology, and innovation. Teams will connect AI agents, models, simulations, robots, cloud labs, and scientific tools into functioning systems to tackle problems in protein design, robotics, materials, manufacturing, experimental science, and beyond. The challenge is to turn ideas into tested results - and demonstrate how agents collaborating across teams and disciplines can accomplish more together. Explore how agents can specialize, challenge one another’s assumptions, learn from failed experiments, and combine their expertise to solve harder problems. Show how collaboration changes what your system can discover, design, or build. One agent's discovery becomes another's starting point. A tool built by one team enables an experiment by another. Connect your team of AIs, share a capability someone else needs, and build on what others have learned, produced, built. The ambition is an internet of agents through which scientific knowledge, tools, and capabilities can grow, evolve and be utilized across teams and institutions. 🗓️ When: October 30-November 1, 2026 📍 Where: MIT Media Lab Bring your expertise, your tools, and a problem worth solving - or find one. Help build AI that can contribute to science through what it can discover, create, and make work.

🧬 Single cell genomics is growing up. Great to be at SCG 2026 in Dunblane, near Edinburgh, surrounded by beautiful Scottish countryside. One of my favorite meetings for catching up with so many colleagues and friends and, above all, seeing where the field is heading. Yesterday I presented LabCompass, our generative inverse design approach that uses cellular world models not just to predict biology, but to help decide what experiment to do next. What strikes me at this meeting is how far single cell genomics has come. What started as a strongly technology driven field is increasingly becoming a foundation for understanding biology, disease and ultimately medicine. We are moving from measuring cells, to modeling them, to asking what we should do next. And some of the best discussions still happen outside the lecture hall. 🏃‍♂️ Great morning runs with Ido Amit, Barbara Treutlein and Nir Yosef through the beautiful countryside. Many thanks to John Marioni and the whole organizing team for bringing together such a fantastic community and program. #SingleCellGenomics #ComputationalBiology #SCG2026

Nature has just published a pretty incredible paper. The authors introduce a framework that turns research papers into interactive AI agents. Rather than engaging with a paper only as static text, researchers can question its agent, ask it to reproduce an analysis, or apply the paper’s methods to new data. This could make research methods much easier to understand, reproduce, and use. It also opens up a strange possibility: research papers that can, in a sense, talk to one another. The authors demonstrate this by connecting agents derived from different papers so that they can combine their methods and data. Used carefully (and with human scientific judgment still firmly in the loop) this could become a powerful new form of scientific communication. * Full paper in the first reply

After co-inventing ChatGPT, I kept asking myself: why have superhuman chat models not led to AGI? I’ve spent the last 2 years in stealth building a new way to train models (RLCD), and a new type of frontier AI model that we are releasing today: Jev • 20-200x faster • 40-400x cheaper (w/ output tokens free) • Frontier composable intelligence optimized for decisions AFAICT the shortest path to AI-based economic revolution

Topping-out ceremony at the ZDMG 🏗️ The shell of the Center for Digital Medicine and Health now stands on the campus of TUM Klinikum rechts der Isar. Bavaria's Science Minister Markus Blume joined us. Three signals I'm taking away: 🤝 Top-tier medicine is teamwork. Medicine, computer science and mathematics under one roof. Data scientists belong on a clinical campus just as much as clinician scientists do. 🔬 Top-tier research is at home in Bavaria. €47.1M from the Free State and the federal government, around 140 workplaces on 2,050 m², including a data observatory and a high-performance compute cluster. 🧩 It takes a joint strategy. The ZDMG doesn't stand alone. Together with TranslaTUM, the new MS Center, the MDSI and initiatives like the Highmed Agenda, Munich is building a real ecosystem for AI in medicine. From the groundbreaking in June 2025 to the topping-out ceremony, with completion expected end of 2027. Thanks to everyone building and researching here. 🙏 #ZDMG #TUM #AIinMedicine
