If you’re under 26, you have never lived a day without someone orbiting above you. 26 years ago today, the first resident crew arrived at the ISS. Humanity has had a home in space ever since. The research and advances made possible by our crews, teams on the ground and international partners have helped prepare us to live and work on the Moon and Mars. As we transition to the next era of our presence in low Earth orbit, we build on everything they have made possible.

We’re at the fabulous @esa open day at Harwell. Great to see so many people queueing to get in and so many children being inspired by space! You can hear our interviews with two ESA reserve astronauts and a @BepiColombo scientist in our next podcast.

A good piece on Lyme disease. I encountered many of the issues discussed. Statistically, yes, I was unlucky to get it along with several accompanying infections. But the lack of knowledge encountered and delays in testing and treatment had consequences too.

The importance of numeracy via protein bars. Buying in bulk is cheaper, right? A box of 10 @ £23 = £2.30 a bar. A pack of 4 @ £8.80? £2.20 a bar. A single bar… £1.80 (with clubcard). So I’d pay £5 more buying in bulk for a box of 10. Do supermarkets think we can’t do maths?

The number of areas in society right now where women's rights, thoughts and feelings are ignored - in this case to simply not sit next to a man masturbating - never fails to shock me.
United employees forced a 25 year old woman to return to her seat next to a man who was masturbating because the flight was full. After landing, the airline told the woman it was her responsibility to contact police and gave her a $100 travel credit. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/pas…

Barack Obama at his last press briefing with reporters, 2017: "I have enjoyed working with all of you. That does not, of course, mean that I've enjoyed every story that you have filed, but that's the point of this relationship. You're not supposed to be sycophants. You're supposed to be skeptics. You're supposed to ask me tough questions. You're not supposed to be complimentary, but you're supposed to cast a critical eye on folks who hold enormous power."

Society needs a science writing community that is strong, skilled and trusted, never more than now, when misinformation and disinformation is so easy to produce. Protecting the people who do that work becomes a crucial pillar of a functional society. No association can promise a fail-safe against determined fraud. What we can promise is that our members will not face this new challenging landscape alone. Our statement below.
