I could have stayed on the sidelines and complained about our broken permitting system, but I believe that if you see a problem this serious, you ought to do what you can to help fix it. It’s time to get America building again. 🏗️

The House has done its job on permitting reform by passing meaningful legislation to cut through burdensome, outdated regulations that have delayed projects for years. Energy producers in the Permian Basin and across the country need this relief. Permitting reform will also create more jobs and lower energy costs for families. Senate Democrats need to stop the delays and get this done.

Permitting reform is one of the best things we can do for our country, and the package negotiated in the Senate is objectively good for our country. We should take it up and pass it this work period, instead of waiting and potentially missing our window.

Permitting reform will lower costs for American families, starting with fuel and energy prices. Would Democrats rather sink this historic bipartisan agreement than help them?

Republicans are 100% committed to permitting reform. The Democrats – specifically Chuck Schumer – don’t seem to care at all about what’s happening around the country. They seem to be happier with higher energy costs We need energy costs down. We need to be able to do construction to build things better, faster, cheaper, stronger. Chuck Schumer continues to block permitting reform.

Saying permitting reform "guts" the clean water act is wildly dishonest: - Section 401 of the Clean Water Act is just one of several important sections of the law. Changing 401 will not lower water quality standards. - Section 401 gives states responsibility to certify that projects meet water quality standards set by other sections of the Clean Water Act. - The problem is that some states stretch or outright misuse their 401 authority to block projects they dislike (pipelines), akin to how the Trump administration has used DOD waivers to block projects it doesn't like (wind). - All Congress is considering right now is how to limit the misuse of 401. Congress is NOT going to repeal 401, federalize 401 certification, or say projects don't have to meet water quality standards. - I expect reforms will be limited to requiring states to: make decisions based on water quality analysis only, explain their decisions in writing, and potentially limit how states add conditional when they certify projects. - None of this is remotely "gutting" the Clean Water Act or Section 401. 401 will still be a state-controlled process, it will still check water quality standards. The only thing that will change is the ability to misuse the process to block projects for political reasons. - 401 reform is also important for transmission lines. If Congress creates a federal backstop for siting and permitting transmission lines, 401 may become the last veto that states opposed to new lines can use. nitter.net/mattyglesias/status/21…

Democratic leadership is blocking permitting reform simply to prevent Republicans from getting a win before the midterms. We have cooperated with everything Democrats asked for, yet they walked away & put short-term political efforts ahead of what is best for the country. The American people cannot afford more partisan stalling while energy costs skyrocket.

It’s a shame that the men and women elected to serve their constituents in the United States Senate allow petty partisanship and political games get in the way of what’s best for our country. Call me naïve, but I’d hoped to see more courage from my colleagues.

There is no reason to delay until November. In fact, there is EVERY reason to stay in town and get this done as quickly as possible. Committee leaders have been working towards this deal for nearly two years. Nothing in this deal is new – these are commonsense reforms that stakeholders across the industry are asking for.   Democrats continue to move the goalposts rather than do what’s right for our country.
