Today marks the 75th anniversary of the ANZUS Treaty - the cornerstone of the Australia-America Alliance.
75 years ago, a bond between two peoples that had been forged in war was signed in writing to formalise the ironclad commitment of our two nations to each other’s security and that of the free world.
The ANZUS Treaty is one of the great Liberal legacies of Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies and the Australia-America Alliance has been expanded by every Liberal Prime Minister ever since.
Today, our world is beset by new challenges far beyond those imagined when the ANZUS Treaty was signed, but what endures is an unbreakable bond between Australians and Americans and an unyielding commitment not only to the prosperity of our two democracies, but to forge a world in which freedom prevails and democracy is defended.
Above all, today we honour those Australians and Americans who down the generations have stood together against the foes of our democracies. The camaraderie forged by their shared sacrifice and service is the bond of mateship that prepares us for the next 75 years and beyond.

Yes. Because people have unjustly held Australian Jews responsible for the actions of the state of Israel - it’s called antisemitism. A Royal Commission was called to stop it, not perpetuate it.
The idea that the spike in antisemitism in Australia is unrelated to Israel’s conduct in Gaza is simply unreal. Like the idea of the earth being flat is simply unreal.

The Royal Commission is supposed to combat anti-semitism, not facilitate it. Cross-examining an Australian Jew about the actions of the Israeli government is an abuse of the process.
It should not happen again and David Ossip deserves an apology.
Commissioner Virginia Bell allowed the lawyers representing the Palestinian advocacy groups to cross-examine David Ossip about the actions of the Israeli government while he was giving evidence about the fear, trauma and antisemitism experienced by Australian Jews.
This was a profound perversion where a witness appearing before the Royal Commission was placed in the position of answering for the conduct of a foreign government.
This is victim-blaming - and the Royal Commission outrageously allowed it to unfold.
Worse still, allowing this line of questioning plays into the dangerous narrative that Australian Jews are legitimate proxies for Israel and may be blamed, challenged or held collectively accountable for events in the Middle East.
This conflation is at the heart of the antisemitism crisis that has swept Australia since October 7.
And it happened on the Royal Commission’s watch.
