Michael Spalter is the guest on the September 19, 2026 episode of Verse Talks, the podcast from @verse_works
In an hour with host @leyla_solos he talks about how he and Anne started collecting digital art and built the collection, and about the pioneers of computer art.
Much of the episode is about Charles Csuri : his life and work, why he stayed outside the traditional art market, MoMA's early acquisition of Hummingbird, and his later 3D ribbon works. The collection holds Hummingbird 1 , from 1967, among its twelve Csuri works.
The two also get into artistic value versus market value, museums rediscovering the early computer artists, NFTs and generative art, and collecting as stewardship.

New to the Spalter Digital Collection: “800 Rectangles à Valeur Variable (800 Rectangles with Variable Values)” - A 1981 screenprint on paper by Vera Molnár.
Part of a portfolio of five screenprints, each 50 × 32.5 cm. The five sheets carry the same 800 rectangles in the same positions. The only thing that changes is the tonal value, the "valeur." It's a demonstration that in her work the image isn't the shapes, it's the relationship between them.

“Girls with Maple Leaves” - A 1967 plotter drawing in ink on paper by Leslie Mezei.
Made in Canada's centennial year on the University of Toronto's IBM 7094 and a CalComp plotter, it is one of Mezei's maple-leaf series: two digitized drawings, a girl and a leaf, scattered across a ten by ten grid by a random routine in his own SPARTA drawing language.

Mark Wilson: New Plotter Drawings and Four Decades of Prints at Machine Arts Gallery
Computer art pioneer Mark Wilson opens a solo exhibition at Machine Arts Gallery in Peekskill, New York, on Friday, September 4, 2026, with a reception from 6 to 8pm and the artist in attendance. The exhibition runs through September. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays 10am to 6pm, Fridays by chance.
The show, in the gallery Bantam Tools runs at 107 S Division St, brings together more than twenty prints spanning Wilson’s career and five new pen plotter drawings, his first plotted works since the early 1990s. (!)
Wilson, one of the original American Algorists, bought a Texas Instruments home computer in 1980 and has written his own code ever since, at a time when, as he tells Machine Arts Magazine , “The art world in those days was very contemptuous of anything made with a computer.”
The Spalter Digital collection holds 36 works by Wilson , from two 1981 Hatchpoint plotter drawings to inkjet prints from 2010.

New to the Spalter Digital Collection: Vera Molnár, "A Céline D. / En Diagonale" (2012).
Molnár's method never changed: set a rule, introduce a controlled disturbance, let it compound across a series.
This 2012 canvas applies that method without a computer. It was painted the year of her retrospective at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen and is dedicated to a "Céline D."

New to the Spalter Digital Collection: “Triangles I-V” - 2023 serigraphs on Rives BFK paper by Vera Molnár.
At 99, the last year of her life, in a retirement home, Molnár watched light come through her door and cross the floor all day. She had spent sixty years asking what happens when a shape shifts slightly, and these five prints ask it one last time, without a computer.
Printed at Éditions FANAL in Basel, a workshop in an old paper mill in the Sankt Alban valley where she had been making prints since 1991.

New to the Spalter Digital Collection: "Transjovian Pipeline," a 1979 cibachrome print by David Em.
When this image was made, Em was artist-in-residence at NASA's JPL. He was inspired in part by the deep-space astronomy environment during the historic flybys of Jupiter and Saturn by the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft. He made this on a PDP-11, using software written by Jim Blinn.
Em's images brought widespread public attention to digital art. It became one of the most reproduced digital images of the 1980s.

New to the Spalter Digital Collection: “Carres, Rectangles, et Triangles Du Cycle "A La Recherche de Paul Klee" (Squares, Rectangles, and Triangles From the "In Search of Paul Klee" series)”
Vera Molnár spent the early 70s chasing Paul Klee's geometry two ways at once: an IBM mainframe drove the plotter versions, and gouaches like this 1972 one she painted herself, following the same rules.

Victor Acevedo: Artist Talk at Goldsmiths, University of London
American digital art pioneer Victor Acevedo -@Acevedomedia - presents a talk on four decades of digital experimentation at Goldsmiths, University of London on October 6, 2026, at 6pm BST.
Hosted by art historian Catherine Mason and co-sponsored by the Computer Art Society, the evening traces Acevedo's work from his earliest desktop-computer images in 1983 to recent pieces on the blockchain, along with his role in building the Los Angeles digital art scene.
Acevedo's work is held in major collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Anne & Michael Spalter Digital Art Collection. A recording will be available after the event.
