Another day, another example of Labour refusing to spend money on defence. Just a few weeks into the job and one of Wes Streeting’s first acts as Defence Secretary is to cut £800m allocated to refurbish military housing. It is frankly incredible this new Labour Government under Andy Burnham would treat service personnel and families this poorly.

Thought Badenoch's speech was good last year. This surpassed it. Drew a crystal clear line between herself and Andy Burnham on major issues of substance. But even more significantly, draw a line between herself and Farage. There will be no uniting the right. She wants to crush Reform.

A violent criminal doesn’t become less dangerous just because the Government has run out of prison cells. We have a plan to build 50,000 new prison places, the most since Queen Victoria, so we can end early release.

Kemi Badenoch has announced the Conservatives will spend £2bn annually to create the extra spaces within seven years of taking power. The Tory leader said the move – largely funded by cutting foreign aid to just £1bn a year – would be the biggest prison-building programme since the Victorian era and enable the Tories to cancel Labour’s early release of “dangerous” offenders to tackle jail overcrowding ⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

The main reason there have been no budget leaks is because they still don’t really have a clue what to do!!
Senior Labour figures are privately voicing unease about John Healey’s approach to his crucial first budget this month, against the backdrop of volatile global markets and soaring energy costs. The chancellor’s conference speech was warmly received by Labour members - but government insiders cast doubt over lack of investment and growth policy or any pitch-rolling for possible tax rises. Narrow focus of budget expected to rule out radical changes to property and capital gains taxes - though Healey calling in bank bosses next week has reignited speculation of windfall tax. Labour MPs fear that failing to take more drastic action, particularly on surging energy prices, could leave voters nonplussed. One said: “John may want the budget to be low key but it will send a massive signal of our intent.” theguardian.com/politics/202…

When candidates campaign in foreign languages, it's impossible for most voters to hold them accountable. And it's almost always used to pander to group-based grievances. We must ban this poisonous practice, for good, and protect our democracy.

We have had a lot of questions about why the plants on #OxfordStreet have been allowed to die. Taking care of them, mostly ensuring they are watered, was the job of @CityWestminster until a year ago. It was handed over to the Mayor's teams in line with other responsibilities. But they didn't have a contract with anyone to take care of the plants and didn't do it themselves, so they have all been allowed to die. In the grand scheme of things, it's a small issue. But it's a very visible example of how not being ready can lead to things going wrong. Managing a space like #OxfordStreet requires hundreds of things to be provided for - from plant watering to street cleaning. If we are going to pedestrianise it, let's take the time to get it right. At the moment it's just being rushed. Am all for deadlines to get things to happen but false ones can lead to unnecessary problems and things going wrong. Like dead plants. @FitzWestForum @MaryleboneAssoc @mayfairforum @sohosocietyw1 @westminstertory

This was Burnham’s “promise” not to reopen Brexit on 18 May 2026. Why? Because he had to win the Makerfield by-election, where two-thirds of his constituents voted to leave. Utterly shameless and wrong. BBC report here: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx21…

Andy Burnham wants to take Britain back to the 1970s, a time of more government control, more trade union control and no economic growth. There is a reason our country took a different course after that decade. Nothing Burnham announced today will do anything to fix Britain’s long-term problems. He had no plan to fix our stagnant economy. No plan to fund defence. No plan to sort out the spiralling welfare bill, beyond more government schemes. His proposal to change the triple lock is already falling apart under scrutiny, and it won’t generate enough savings to fund a nationalised care system for another two decades, which means more tax rises are inevitable. Britain does not need to recreate the politics of the 1970s. It needs a government prepared to take the difficult decisions, back those who work and build businesses, and look confidently to the future.
