It saddens me to see many BJP supporters outside Maharashtra make blatantly uncharitable comments about Maharashtra's social and political profile. Like every other state in India, Maharashtra has a very nuanced, layered, complex, and sensitive social and political history. Friends of BJP outside Maharashtra need to understand these social and political nuances and sensitivities before they comment on politics and society in Maharashtra. Iconic figures like Jotiba Phule, Savitribai Phule, and Babasaheb Ambedkar have made immense contribution towards building the reformist and progressive social and political sensibilities of the Maharashtrian society, as have Veer Savarkar, Lokmanya Tilak, Gopal Krushna Gokhale, and many others. Maharashtra is not a land where one social reformer can be or should be pitted against the other/others. It is one full fabric, one large colourful mosaic that looks beautiful and peaceful in its entirety. The Congress party, especially in the last three decades, has committed the blunder of insulting a Maharashtra icon like Veer Savarkar, just as it humiliated Babasaheb Ambedkar several decades back. The Congress party in Maharashtra is paying for those blunders as it must. Years back a Congress leader in Maharashtra, who has since left the party, had insightfully explained to me how the Congress party had alienated almost every caste and community in Maharashtra by its cynical, unimaginative, elitist, and unaccommodating politics. In stark contrast, the BJP in Maharashtra has been wise, pragmatic, reformist, inclusive, and aggregating in its expanse. Nobody quite represents this BJP in Maharashtra the way Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis does. He has easily been the most inclusive, accommodating, imaginative, futuristic, and wise politician Maharashtra has seen in several decades. Add to this his illustrious performance as the Chief Minister with an unprecedented push to infrastructure, economy, and investment in Maharashtra. It is saddening to see people outside Maharashtra, who are otherwise friendly to the BJP, not appreciate these nuances of Maharashtrian society and politics and frequently make uncharitable, sometimes nastily personal comments on Fadnavis. Lets not lose a good, bright, and wise politician to loose talk.
