The AI buildout runs on debt. Where does it end up? Nick Nemeth (@NickNemo17): a lot of it on the insurers, and a lot of it off balance sheet. With 90% margins on memory and 75% at NVIDIA, the technology has to be better than amazing to clear the hurdle. TFTC episode 792.

July 30: "Yields have got to rise." Michael Howell of CrossBorder Capital (@crossbordercap): with nominal growth near 6-7%, a 10-year yield 200+ basis points below it could not last. This week the 10-year hit 5.1%, a 19-year high. TFTC episode 776.

Bitcoin's quantum problem is two problems. Jonas Nick (@n1ckler): what to do in an emergency if the curve breaks now, and how Bitcoin works long term. Hash-based signatures are the emergency option he thinks could reach consensus relatively easily. TFTC episode 700.

One data point is all it takes. @jvisserlabs on what flips AI from boom to "bubble": power that can't be built in time, a flat line in Anthropic's growth curve, DRAM prices peaking, one slow quarter of CPU demand. Then the worry turns to the debt. The bubble case went mainstream this week. TFTC episode 753.

A rate hike cannot fix an oil shock. Joe Consorti (@JoeConsorti): this is push inflation - input costs rising from the Strait of Hormuz, not too much spending. The Fed can't fix that with rates. A hike only destroys demand, leads to recession, and then to more stimulus. The 10-year just hit 5.1%, with oil back above $103. TFTC episode 750.

Bessent asked to be judged by the 10-year yield. It just hit 5% for the first time since 2007. @LukeGromen, back in May: the three arrows became zero for three. Inflation ripping, the 10-year near five-year highs. Fail, fail, fail, fail. TFTC episode 748.

How does a first-lien loan go to zero? @dgt10011 on private credit: public bank loans recover about 30 cents on the dollar. When a private loan recovers nothing, the problem is not the collateral. It's the underwriting. What were you doing? Apollo just gated its private credit fund again. TFTC episode 729.

Leverage has to go somewhere. Nick Nemeth (@NickNemo17): a long bull market piles it into the federal balance sheet, corporates, private credit and shadow banking. When the Titanic goes down, the water goes into every room. The room he watches is insurance, where the incentives are the worst of any industry, banking included. TFTC episode 792.

Not the petrodollar. The petro stablecoin. Michael Every (@TheMichaelEvery): left to markets alone, dollar stablecoins don't win. With state power they can - pay for imports in them, and get Gulf producers to ask to be paid in them. Then every country needs stablecoins to buy oil. TFTC episode 789.

Sam Lyman (@SamLyman33) went looking for where the data center backlash comes from. What he found: Chinese English-language media running stories against the US build out for about a year, and a network of US nonprofits echoing the same messaging in communities across the country. TFTC episode 793.

Why the CLARITY Act died in the Senate. Sam Lyman (@SamLyman33) of the Bitcoin Policy Institute: the White House answered about 80% of Democrats' ethics concerns, and the vote still came out along party lines. His read is the midterms: nobody wanted to hand Trump a win this close to the election. TFTC episode 793.

Most of the grid queue will never get built. Brandon Bailey (@bitcoinbeezy): he puts it at 10 to 30% of interconnection requests, so power that is already energized keeps getting more valuable per megawatt. The miners already have it. CleanSpark just unveiled a $6.6B AI data center lease. TFTC episode 761.

Google can switch on a new post-quantum scheme today and switch it off tomorrow. Brandon Black (@reardencode): Bitcoin can't. A bad crypto system in a global decentralized network is very hard to take back out, so the bar to put one in is much higher. TFTC episode 733.

In most wars, nobody seizes anybody's money. Vince Lanci: then the US and Europe froze Russia's reserves, and the rest of the world decided the one reason to hold Treasuries over gold was gone. China started buying gold in public to show it meant business. China is now cutting Treasuries and adding gold. TFTC episode 670, with @Sorenthek.

What a run on an insurer looks like. Nick Nemeth: people surrender their annuities, the assets are forced down, the downgrades come, and BBB paper with $1.40 of reserve per $100 is 70 times levered. A state regulator is now moving to take over insurers over their debt exposure. TFTC episode 734, with @NickNemo17.

The Fed just hiked. Does AI capex care? John Tinsman: if your ROI is 100%, or a thousand percent in xAI's case, a one or two point hike doesn't matter. And the hyperscalers are spending cash they were already sitting on. TFTC episode 752, with @JohnTinsman.

A 3% mortgage is a pair of golden handcuffs. Peter St. Onge: the Fed took rates to zero in COVID, people locked in 3%, and now a 7% mortgage more than doubles the payment. So nobody sells, and the house never comes back on the market. Mortgage rates just brushed 7% again. TFTC episode 764, with @profstonge.

Public miners are running for the AI door. MARA just bought 1,200 acres in Texas for $600m, CleanSpark is pitching a buildout, JPMorgan backed IREN's pivot and double-downgraded MARA. Jamie McAvity ran the argument to its end in June: the crowding of mining is what made the AI switch inevitable — and it is exactly why nobody investing in mining now is the point. "Now that nobody is investing in Bitcoin mining... it's the best time to invest in Bitcoin mining." TFTC episode 758, with @jamesmcavity.

The Fed decides today, and a hike is expected. Gary Brode's point is about what that reaches. The Fed sets the overnight rate. The bond market sets the rest of the curve, one week to 30 years. His example: the Fed cut 175 basis points from September 2024, and the yield on the 10-year went up anyway. TFTC episode 715, with @Gary_Brode.

The CLARITY Act died in the Senate yesterday, 49-50, with no Democratic votes. Matt Dines, recorded 26 August: "Clarity passed the House is my understanding. It is hung up in the Senate. It does not have the votes to make it to the executive's desk from this Congress." His read of why it did not matter as much as the headlines say: the agencies stopped waiting. They are writing rules regardless. TFTC episode 786, with @LeveredUSTs.
