You won't sum me up for your reply here

The absolute loathing this government has for families and the obligations we should have between generations is devastating.
Let me get this straight. Work all your life building a business. Sell that business to a rando - charged at 24%. Try to pass it on to your family - charged at 45%. Genuinely insane telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

In other words: earned income, 24% tax rate; unearned income, 45% tax rate. What about the millions of families in which nothing is passed down to the next generation? Are they somehow less familial, or have they somehow failed in their obligations to their children?

Maybe they should work harder? If we're not going to incentivise building something, taking on debt that isn't a mortgage to invest in infrastructure, what is the country going to do? Hope private equity from the US does it? Hope the state does it? HS2 etc.

Again, when economic indicators were slowly improving despite US tarriff chaos and middle east conflict during Reeves as Chancellor, how did these premium outlets not recognise it? How are they surprised? It was clear we were moving in the right direction.
Optimism for government finances suggests we may want to consider at least partially correcting our assessment of the former chancellor thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

The UK economy grew strongly in the first half of 2024, expanding by 0.7% in Q1 (first quarter) That was when the Tories were in power before the Labour transition Again, what did she do that was different to the Tories?

It cannot be beyond the minds of our greatest people to know that when it's hot and sunny, now, we should probably dig out reservoirs to as much extra capacity as we can. That way when it inevitably pisses down in winter for 3 months we have a greater capacity?

You'd hope that whatever has been sat at the bottom of a drinking water reservoir isn't going to need millions spending on removing pollutants. Fine test it but I suspect spreading it on surrounding farmland would give the farmers some nice fertile soil.

Not these days, need an expensive permit off the EA to spread anything other than cow muck on farm land

This is a very silly story. There is no "plot" and no "raid". Just a hysterical misunderstanding of a technical consultation. There *is* a real issue - but it's likely unintended and I expect it will fixed in the legislation. A 🧵 on what's really going on

In your example, why would you get a tax reduction to sell to your daughter? Isn’t that an example of why we’re in the worsening inequality mess we’re in today, because the wealthy constantly get a discount?

Family businesses getting crumbs off tax rates are not why inequality is one of the lowest rates in the world.

The questions we have to keep asking, but never seem to: what kind of business activity can be done more cheaply, easily or effectively in the UK than elsewhere? And how do we ensure that the list grows rather than continuing to shrink?

London based finance and that's about it Having people that understand industry and markets, rather than people that have floated around charities There is no incentive at the moment for sound politics, Even countries we think are better at things than us,are drowning in debt

This is not surprising. 1990 utilities sold cheaply to profiteers Engineers were paid to retire Skills devalued in GB for a generation Rapid transition off fossils And suddenly, constraints!!! Who could have predicted it eh? Now everyone is playing catch-up very sadly 😬
No seriously, someone needs to sort this mess out. We’re paying to generate electricity, paying NOT to generate it, and paying AGAIN to replace it. Actually we spent £505 MILLION in balancing costs in September alone! And the annual bill could reach £8 BILLION by 2030! this is not the future of cheap energy 🤡
