What a strange response from ASI ! The AMASR Act, 1958 was enacted to protect ancient monuments, not to put an end to worship. Section 16 expressly recognises protected monuments that are places of worship. Yet ASI distinguishes between temples where worship continued and those where it stopped. Stopped why? Invasions? Desecration? Centuries of abandonment? Must a historical wrong become grounds for perpetuating it? Even a Parliamentary Standing Committee in 2023 recommended examining the revival of worship, subject to conservation safeguards. Nobody is asking ASI to compromise conservation. But surely Nitya Puja need not be incompatible with it. And merely citing the AMASR Act without specifying the provision that prohibits worship is no answer at all. A temple was built for worship.
