The administration’s trade policies are hammering America’s farmers, and the polling in reliably red states shows it. Some Republicans are looking to Jimmy Carter for a solution and floating a diesel export ban. It would be as effective as Jimmy Carter’s economics. A diesel export ban would remove 20% of the world’s traded overseas diesel supply overnight and send a massive shockwave through supply chains and the global economy - naturally making matters worse ahead of the midterms. Lawmakers in newly found swing states would be better served reclaiming their constitutional authority to set trade policy rather than surrendering to the executive branch. The best way to help farmers is to lower tariffs and open markets to American agricultural products.

As Ive always said, the biggest, largely unforced error of the Trump presidency has been tariffs, and the way the White House carried them out. Imprecision of lumping Canada in the same bucket as China was foolish and the benefits of ramped up domestic manufacturing never materialized, at least to the degree to which they were sold or Trump's polling on the economy would be better. I know what youre saying "how about Iran?" Well Iran can be explained for obvious reasons including destroying the infrastructure of Jihadist loons. Plus I still believe there will be an eventual peace dividend with that regime neutered, if history is any guide. But stoking inflation by mounting a trade war against the likes of Switzerland and Canada, not myopically focusing on the real threat of China, just made price pressures so much worse. People forget the tremendous courage of this moment. The media was awash with reports of an imminent second attack on soft targets. Would the attack be ballistic? Could anthrax be deployed on large crowds? At that time it wasn't a question of if but when. It took courage for the President to walk out there. It took courage for those New Yorkers to show up and cheer. A beautiful display of the indomitable American spirit.

Exactly. The deeper problem is that once government starts subsidizing one preferred family model, it also gains the power to define, regulate, and eventually reshape that model. The family unit transforms from an independent unit into another constituency dependent on Washington.
