City Power has disconnected electricity to the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) premises in Johannesburg over an outstanding municipal debt of R37.2 million. City Power says the account is R37,227,157. 06 in arrears. The latest payment of R50,000 was made on 14 September, but the account remains substantially unpaid. Officials initially faced resistance when they tried to access the premises on Monday morning. The City of Johannesburg and City Power later proceeded with the disconnection. This is not the first disconnection. The premises were also disconnected in September 2024 during an operation targeting customers with about R28 million in combined outstanding debt. City Power says the South African government is responsible for arrangements relating to PAP’s accommodation, with the Department of Public Works historically responsible for rental payments. The City says government institutions are not exempt from credit-control measures and has urged the responsible parties to settle the debt or negotiate a payment arrangement to restore electricity.
