The USGS ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning system is looking for two Physical Scientists to join our Communication, Education, Outreach, and Technical Engagement team.
Help advance earthquake safety through public outreach, education, and partnerships. Candidates with experience in STEM education and public engagement are especially encouraged to apply.
Locations: Mountain View, CA and Seattle, WA
Salary: $100,602 – $145,468 per year (GS-12)
Positions: Permanent, full-time

In 2026, BART is Powered by ShakeAlert!
On ShakeOut Day (10/15) BART tested their emergency response systems and raised public awareness of the importance of having a plan and being prepared.
At 10:15 am, BART triggered their ShakeAlert-powered system automatically slowing all trains to 27mph and then to a very brief stop.
They also made a systemwide public announcement encouraging riders to be prepared for earthquakes.

When the Loma Prieta earthquake hit on Tuesday October 17, 1989, BART was put to the test like never before.
Not only did service resume just a few hours after the quake, BART ran 24-hours a day, seven days a week for about a month while the Bay Bridge was closed.
