I've had an Xbox Elite controller for years and I use only one of the rear bumpers mapped to B, which equates to run/dodge in basically every modern game. Being able to hold sprint or roll in Souls games while still maintaining camera control is incredibly useful.

Cell service is very good even in most rural areas and you can invest in a Starlink if it's a major concern to get in touch with someone in case of a breakdown. A tire inflator + some FixAFlat are going to cover most issues. I'm not sure how much of a hassle/expense these sorts of things would be as a tourist in a rental car but, at least as a native, it's very manageable even if you want to be extra cautious.

You can get a couple big cases of water bottles and a gas can or two for emergencies. America has gas stations almost everywhere and in the rare places there are gaps, there will be road signs everywhere warning you how far you have to go.
