Weather and climate scientist focused on extreme events like floods, droughts, & wildfires on a warming planet.

Given rising interest in the rapidly strengthening El Niño event in the tropical Pacific Ocean, I've created a one-page fact sheet succinctly describing what El Niño is, this year's (remarkable) forecast, and potential impacts from California to global scales. [Thread]

Tropical moisture🌀⛈️is expected to arrive early early next week which will result in increasing rain chances across the Desert Southwest. Some portions of AZ could see significant rainfall totals. Stay tuned as the forecast becomes more clear! #azwx

Between the early-month East Pacific hurricane activity and the ongoing trio of Polo + Nolo + Odalys, the East Pacific basin has now tentatively set a record maximum 30-day rolling accumulated cyclone energy (ACE):
The East Pacific surely is having its moment this year...

Flying from Mississippi to Hawaii yesterday it was mostly clear until we got about 300 miles out from the islands. Scattered clouds became a layer at 22k feet that we skimmed across the top of. Checking satellite imagery it turned out to be an extended band from Hurricane Nolo. After crossing through that there were just smaller puffy clouds that looked interesting as we landed as the sun was setting in Kauai. Time lapse below:

#Polo has come back to Category 5 strength and looks quite impressive! Another big round of eyewall lightning is ongoing. We shall see what recon finds later during this second peak

NWS Flood Inundation Mapping (FIM) now covers nearly 100% of the U.S. population, expanded to include the East Coast, the Great Lakes region, the Rocky Mountains and the northern Plains. FIM visually displays the geographical extent of projected river flooding for more than 3.3 million river miles across the United States and its territories. noaa.gov/news-release/noaa-f… or water.noaa.gov/fim

Great conversation with UC ANR climate scientist @Weather_West on turning climate science into actionable information. Daniel Swain shares insights on extreme weather, wildfire risk & why both climate change mitigation & adaptation are critical to preparing for future disasters.
Daniel Swain, climate scientist behind @Weather_West, has become one of the most trusted voices on events like floods, droughts, and wildfires, helping make extreme weather and climate change accessible and accurate in public discourse. This week on Disasterproof, @KatManalac sits down with Daniel to unpack what the science actually tells us about disaster prediction. We talk about how unprecedented fire conditions were forecasted days in advance of the 2025 LA fires, and Daniel breaks down why a record-breaking Super El Niño could make this winter unlike any other. We also dig into the bigger picture, including why we need to focus on both climate change mitigation and adaptation, and why seeing disasters coming isn't the same as being ready for them. "We absolutely need to be ramping up our adaptation and response efforts as fast as possible since they are lagging behind our improved ability to predict many of these hazards," @Weather_West @ucanr says. He talks with @KatManalac about improving weather forecasts & response
I sat down with one of the most trusted voices in extreme weather and climate science, @Weather_West, and immediately went home to check if I need flood insurance for the coming El Niño season. (And you should too if you're in California.)

We are at #NewYorkClimateWeek + the call for disaster resilience has never been louder. @Weather_West joins @KatManalac for an episode of @disasterproofHQ to discuss extreme weather, disaster resilience, and what the tech world gets wrong about both.

Crazy to see yet another hurricane threat to #Hawaii this season. Tropical Storm #Nolo has formed and will intensify into a potentially strong hurricane to the south of the Big Island over the next 3 days within a favorable environment. Complex steering currents will likely bring Nolo close enough to the Big Island to cause at least severe flooding concerns, and possibly wind hazards if it gets too close. A Hurricane Watch has been issued for the island. The other islands aren't out of the woods either, with uncertainty in the forecast track leaving a small possibility of a closer brush with Nolo. Hope everyone has a plan ready to go after dealing with Lala and Lowell earlier this year.

Forecast regarding soon-to-be major Hurricane Nolo (not to be confused w/current major Hurricane Polo) has become increasingly alarming. A close approach on Sat could bring extreme rainfall (>30 inches) to Big Island, w/risk of widespread & severe flash flooding & damaging winds.

This has already been an extraordinary/historic year for Hawaiian tropical cyclone impacts. Polo would be the third hurricane to directly affect and cause significant damage on the islands (Lala affected Big Island, and Lowell Kauai). And the season will not end this weekend...

"It's warming of the Eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean. That's what El Niño is. An unusually warm blob of water near the Galapagos Islands, 3,500 miles from California," Daniel Swain @Weather_West, @ucanr climate scientist, told @jessicagarrison
Super El Niño is here. California is under a state of emergency. And there's another danger: talking about climate physics at a party. We asked three California-based scientists for some tips on how to speak knowledgeably — and to avoid getting it wrong. buff.ly/3V3Xry9
