Letter send to @JerryBrewer Dear Mr. Brewer, I read your Aug. 25 column on @EnesFreedom and Natasha Cloud with intense dismay, and I want to push back on several of its central claims. I find this line to be the most egregious: "If the trans athlete debate were an organic, fully woman-led controversy, it could have prompted meaningful conversation, empathy in the pursuit of solutions and thoughtful measures taken after an extended process." This is factually wrong, and it erases the women who have been doing exactly that organizing for years — independent of Enes Kanter Freedom or Royce White, and often well before either of them entered the conversation. Attributing the entire debate's origin to "men with extreme right-wing views" doesn't just get the history wrong. It denies agency to the women who've actually been leading it. You also write that the phrase "protecting women's sports" "is used for permission to exclude." Yes. That's the point. Sex-based categories in sports exist precisely to exclude males from female competition, because that exclusion is what makes fair competition for women possible in the first place. I'd welcome your correction, and naming the women who've been doing this work for years — in this column or another.
