Must be able to hide the light from the fire (In the Aftertime with the grid down a campfire can be seen clearly for a couple of miles) Sunken Fire Ring Overall excavation diameter at grade 16'-0" Pit floor diameter (inside face of benches) 12'-0" Pit floor depth below surrounding grade 2'-6" Bench — one ring only continuous except at the two stairs Bench sitting depth 1'-8" (20") Bench seat height above floor 1'-6" (18") Backrest wall above seat 3'-6" to 4'-0" Access ways 2 opposite, each 3'-0" wide Stairs 4 risers @ 7½", treads ~11" Firepit diameter 3'-6", centered (or where ever you'd like it) Firepit height above floor 12" Clear floor from firepit edge to bench face Quick Build Sequence 1. Stake the center. Mark 16' outer circle and 12' floor circle 2. Excavate to 2'-6" at the floor; leave the bench as a 20"-deep packed shelf at 18" above the finished floor 3. Cut two opposite 3' openings and form the four stair treads in the remaining wall thickness 4. Build the center firepit 3'-6" across and 12" high; line it with stone or firebrick if you will burn in it 5. Compact all sitting and walking surfaces.
