That's the actual bottleneck not the sensor quality. @vangrid_io answer: skip the van, use phones people already carry. Per The Block's coverage of their $9M raise: ~100K verified captures, 200K grid events, 1,300+ batch attestations so far. No independent source I found puts a cost-per-mile number on either side of this so I won't pretend one exists. The actual trade being made is coverage frequency vs. capture precision, not a clean cost table. A van revisits a street once a quarter, maybe. A phone-based network can theoretically revisit constantly, wherever someone happens to be walking. Whether "constantly, imperfectly" beats "occasionally, precisely" depends entirely on what the downstream robot/AI actually needs and that's still unproven at scale. Which side of that trade would you actually bet on for physical AI?

How does it look? Physical AI needs real places: streets, buildings, shops, warehouses and alleys. But collecting that data shouldn’t mean collecting the identities of everyone who happens to be there. Thats why the privacy layer matters. With Vangrid’s Android capture, faces and license plates are detected and blurred directly on the device before the footage is uploaded. The readable versions stay on the phone. What reaches the network is the processed capture, while buyers can work with the resulting spatial data and its provenance rather than receiving a database of identifiable people. That distinction becomes important as everyday phones turn into a large network of ground level sensors. More real world data is useful. But privacy should remain part of the architecture, not something added later. The bigger question for me is!! Can we map the physical world in greater detail without turning the people inside it into data points?
