I spent 128 minutes with the fools who dream at the weekend. To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the wonderful La La Land, my youngest daughter Hattie and I lived and breathed the movie as it returned home to the silver screen.
Hattie is a budding film director so itās more than a favourite for both of us ā itās a beautiful audio visual example of on-screen chemistry in āone of those movies they just donāt make any moreā.Ā
There are two notable moments in the movie where the absence of sound plays a key role.Ā
The first hits directly after the musical riot of a concert with John Legend and the band (in direct contemporary contrast to the previous live jazz club performances). On the last note, the screen cuts to black and all audio drops, leaving the audience adrift with the memory of the performance. Itās quite literally the sound of silence.
The second is more subtle. During a heated conversation over a home cooked (burnt!) meal Gosling and Stone hit a key point in the debate at the exact moment the record playing in the background ends. Although other ambient sound and even the conversation continue, the perfectly-timed absence of this musical layer (effectively the soundtrack) is extraordinarily powerful.
Both are examples of taking a beat and using quiet or silence for punctuation. Thereās a real life lessen here as so very few moments of calm exist in our always-on lifestyles. Step back and breathe.
The other, even more personal scene from the movie is Emma Stoneās audition song āThe Fools Who Dreamā. I love every word, so much so Iāve included them below. I can relate, Hattie can relate, I hope they mean something to you too.
La La Land may seem like a movie they donāt make any more, but Iām so very glad they do. So bring on the rebels, the ripples from pebbles, the painters, the poets and plays. And donāt be afraid to make a mess.
Hereās to the ones who dream,
Foolish as they may seem,
Hereās to the hearts that ache,
Hereās to the mess we make,
She captured a feeling,
Sky with no ceiling,
The sunset inside a frame,
She lived in her liquor,
And died with a flicker,
Iāll always remember the flame,
Hereās to the ones who dream,
Foolish as they may seem,
Hereās to the hearts that ache,
Hereās to the mess we make,
She told me
āA bit of madness is key
To give us new colours to see,
Who knows where it will lead us?
And thatās why they need usā
So bring on the rebels,
The ripples from pebbles,
The painters, and poets, and plays,
And hereās to the fools who dream,
Crazy as they may seem,
Hereās to the hearts that break,
Hereās to the mess we make.
