🎥 "I thought they forgot about me." 17-year-old Mohammed Ibrahim, a U.S. citizen who was released from Israeli military prison after ten months of detainment, came to the UNGA this week to advocate for hundreds of Palestinian children still held in Israeli military detention. He spoke on the sidelines of the "Childhood in Custody" high-level dialogue, hosted by Save the Children and co-sponsored by Jordan, Ireland, Palestine, Spain, and South Africa, which brought together Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, and Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour. The meeting was largely a discussion, with no concrete calls to action. Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard condemned states for failing to use the tools already available to them, most notably cutting financial ties with Israel. Israel is the only country in the world that systematically prosecutes children in military courts, detaining between 500 and 700 Palestinian children every year. A new Save the Children report found that in interviews with recently detained children, 86% reported being beaten and 69% experienced sexual violence or harassment while in custody.
