I think President Mahama delivered a strong speech at the ongoing UN General Assembly. I appreciate his willingness to speak for Africa, vulnerable communities, women and children, and those suffering in conflicts around the world. On the Israel–Palestine conflict, however, I felt the balance could have been stronger. To be fair, he did condemn the terrorist attacks by Hamas and called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law. He also reaffirmed Ghana’s support for a viable two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security. But while we rightly speak about the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, we must also remember the Israeli civilians who were murdered and the people who were taken hostage on 7 October 2023. We must also be honest about the role of Hamas and other armed groups. There is documented evidence and allegations that Islamic extremists and Palestinian armed groups have operated from or around civilian areas and constructed tunnel infrastructure beneath civilian structures with some of them housing entries and exists to those tunnels. It is also important to distinguish Palestinians from Hamas and Iranians from the Iranian government. Israel has a legitimate responsibility to protect its citizens from terrorism and attacks. But that responsibility does not remove the obligation to protect civilians and comply with international humanitarian law. Palestinian civilians likewise should never be treated as responsible for the actions of Hamas simply because they are Palestinian. This is where I believe our moral standard must remain consistent. My Christian faith teaches me that another person’s religion, ethnicity or worldview is never a justification for killing them. We should be able to condemn terrorism, antisemitism, attacks on civilians and hostage-taking while also condemning the unlawful killing, starvation, forced displacement and suffering of innocent Palestinians. There must be accountability on all sides. A lasting solution cannot be built by pretending that only one side has suffered or only one side bears responsibility. A genuine two-state solution requires the security, dignity, freedom and self-determination of both Israelis and Palestinians, while extremist ideologies that glorify violence against civilians must be confronted rather than passed on to another generation. We should stand with the innocent without becoming blind to the actions of those who endanger them. No Jew should have to fear being killed because of their faith. No Palestinian child should have to suffer because of the actions of an armed group or a government. No Christian should be persecuted for their faith. And no religion should be used as a justification for murdering another human being. Peace will require truth, accountability, security and justice for everyone. Will this religious war end ?
