Sound pollution is something I’ve written about on here before but most people don’t understand the extent our world is really being polluted with it - and in a way we are not evolved to handle. The body may let you live with the low buzz sounds of your house or other frequented places as we adapt to so much, but most homes can be much quieter. Sometimes the aim should be to go back to the loudest sound being the leaves on the trees outside on a gust of wind - they are at an intermittent, low and safe level (as it should be) Constant low grade sounds are terrible for our Qi (vital life force / energy) and the human nervous system. Even the db for rainfall is measured at the top edge of the safety limit before we enter unhealthy dBA levels / sound levels. (Rain is the last one on a safe level chart, with things like more animated conversations, cars and trucks, hair driers and general city sounds going from green and safe to moderately unsafe) Sometimes, just to see where your home is really at, you just have to turn off everything in your house that makes sound, not just tv or radio, or a distant stove or block, but the fuses, WiFi all appliances, purifiers, outlets if you can, humidifiers, heaters, everything you can think of so that the only sound you might hear exists on your quiet breath or outside the windows. This is actually a way we can practice ancestral practices and right relationship, by going back to how it’s meant to be. The modern world is constantly stripping the body of running on its own original design blueprint. All to say, chronic noise pollution can actually measurably harm the body and some of its systems. It can affect and interfere with the following, including cause some of these (and this is not even a full list) : Sleep quality + ability to stay asleep Our nervous system’s regulation and ability to regulate properly The balance of our autonomic nervous system Our stress response signaling / stress hormone regulation Hypo tension and our blood pressure regulation Our heart rate regulation Cardiovascular function Our metabolic health / regulation of a healthy metabolism Our attention and concentration Memory and learning Cognitive performance Emotional regulation, as hinted at above Our hearing and auditory processing And even cause our increase tinnitus For those who have missed past posts on this and are interested, here are a few charts :

acute stress suppresses appetite, but chronic stress increases it, and for this reason overeating is protective in the short-term but maladaptive long-term. "self-medicating" with food is a very real mechanism. a study in 2007 found food triggers opioid release, which suppresses HPA activity and helps shut down the stress response. stuffing your face for a while will absolutely save you, as the stress response is expensive and damaging physiologically. intermittent fasting can be extremely beneficial but shouldn't be done until you've learned to manage your stress. you may have the discipline to restrict food, but discipline when it's misused in this way is an enemy. in the case of chronic stress it's best to overeat nutrient-dense foods while you learn to manage your stress and lifestyle (quit bad job, quit bad relationship, move, fix the big problems), and change remaining stress perspective from threat to challenge. then intermittent fasting is beneficial. I think the "women shouldn't fast" mantra is due largely to sex differences in the stress response. women report more chronic stress associated with our routine role functioning as worker, parent, spouse, caregiver, household manager. I don't think women are fundamentally physiologically less able to benefit from intermittent fasting, and I don't think it's dangerous per se. it's just imperative that we do everything we can to minimize stress before we start fasting. but fasting belongs to women as much as to men.

A truly amazing read. Very long but extremely satisfying. Grateful to my friend Russell for sharing @davidbessis brilliant Substack article on why mathematics still matters in an age of artificial intelligence.
Replying to @rslantonie
anyways, reading Bessis’ most recent post has been well-orienting through the turbulent Navier-Stokes solve in the meantime, i’d like to focus on understanding flow by looking at raindrops in the Manila weather davidbessis.substack.com/p/t…

A child “would rather dress himself than be dressed, even magnificently. He prefers washing himself to the pleasant feeling of being clean. He would rather build a house than own one. He is thus disposed because he must first form his own life before he can enjoy it.” Montessori

You want to be EXPENSIVE in the way you think. Rich in perspective, expensive with your attention, high in your standards & difficult to influence. Your mind should reflect everything you’ve invested into becoming who you are.

If your child is concentrating on doing something, don’t interrupt. Don’t correct, don’t compliment, don’t join in. Leave them be.

Can’t believe I’m 38 years old and 20 years into Christianity before I heard about postcolonial thought & feminist theology. Halfway through this gem by @KwokPuiLan introduced in a sermon by Pastor Pauline from Free Community Church and I love how much I am learning. Grateful.

yes quite fascinating indeed
modern texting has basically created a new kind of social perception which is insanely fascinating. i.e. after enough exposure you stop reading the literal words & start reading all of the deltas instead. those start to matter a lot more. stuff like response latency, even punctuation, message length, whether someone answers every part of a text, emoji usage, emoji tags, sudden changes in warmth, initiation frequency, when they stop asking questions, whether their cadence feels effortless or managed, etc. the content becomes almost secondary. it’s remarkable how much human meta data flows through even a medium that mostly removes the non verbal stuff by default.

I think the highest form of spirituality is simply learning how to live your life. Not escaping into altered states, collecting initiations, memorizing scriptures, or trying to become something other than what you already are. All of those things do have their place along the way, but eventually they have to lead you back here. Back to making breakfast, taking care of your body, doing your work, loving the people around you, and paying attention to what is directly in front of you. The point of the path isn’t to take you out of life, it’s to teach you how to be completely inside it. The point of practice isn’t to spend your entire life practicing. It’s to become so completely present that the division between practice and life disappears. You stop looking for the sacred somewhere else because you realize there is nowhere else for it to be. Washing dishes is it. Training is it. Sitting quietly with someone you love is it. Growing old is it. Even boredom, grief, and uncertainty are part of it. Eventually you put down all the methods and explanations and simply participate in your own existence. The highest teaching is living ordinary life completely.
