Notice the pattern here:
1. Identity who you are (age)
2. Monitor what you do (data profiling)
3. Control your access & experience (restrictions)
And Julie is right: to do this for some customers, Meta will have to do this to all customers. This is being built into the access control layer of the platform - right up front for all users, so that certain ones can be sanctioned.
But remember that in Silicon Valley, data is gold. The more data Meta is legally required to gather and use in order to comply, the larger and more powerful they become.
And don’t forget what they have used that power for in the past.
A few years ago, say the wrong word and you were banned. Even more recently, buying certain online services or goods landed you with a “domestic terrorist” label. That was done out of public view. Now Meta is legally required to expand and use their surveillance powers.
New Mexico required massive changes to Meta's platforms in their state as part of the largest judgment against a social media company - the changes include age verification, data collection, censorship, and surveillance of ALL users.
This week NM lawmakers announced a new "package" of online "safety" bills they will be introducing in the 2027 legislative session. The proposed bills will micromanage kids' feeds (after determining which users are kids), screen time, notifications, AI interactions, and data. Full on surveillance state.
