Multilateralism is the only realistic way to address the defining challenges of our time: peace and security, the climate emergency, economic insecurity and artificial intelligence. The EU’s message is clear: we need multilateralism that is strong, effective, representative and capable of delivering for people. That is why, this week, the EU joined forces with 🇦🇺, 🇧🇧, 🇧🇷, 🇨🇦, 🇮🇳 and 🇰🇪 to launch #P4M: Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace and Prosperity. Our shared commitment must translate into concrete action: ending Russia’s aggression and achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, in line with the UN Charter and respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity; ending the suffering of civilians in Gaza and Palestine and advancing the Two-State solution; and pursuing a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Iran. When we act together, multilateralism delivers for people. Read my address to the UN General Assembly on behalf of the EU: link.europa.eu/xXBWxm

While here in New York, it was a pleasure to meet Mayor @ZohranKMamdani and participate in the event ‘Building an Economy for the Many’. In an interdependent world, we need coordinated solutions to global and local challenges. We cannot build an economy that works for the many without peace and stability in the world. And we cannot build a more peaceful and stable world if our societies are divided and people feel left behind. That is why we must defend international law and multilateral institutions like the @UN. And that is why we must put the well-being of our citizens at the centre of our policies. link.europa.eu/CMWFGk

A pleasure to join @eucopresident António Costa in co-chairing the Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace & Prosperity (P4M) Summit. Took the opportunity to: ✅ Stress the essentiality of multilateralism today to preserve the spirit of international cooperation from extreme competition, geopolitical tensions and conflicts. ✅ Highlight the need to address specific dimensions of ongoing conflicts; build frameworks & guardrails for emerging capabilities; de-risk & diversify to counter dominance & disruption; and the importance of international law, rules and norms. ✅ Make a case for Reformed Multilateralism to strengthen the advocacy for multilateralism itself. Participative deliberations & transparent decisionmaking could provide the hope & optimism to the @UN system and reinforce our resolve to work together. #UNHighLevelWeek

An excellent meeting with @MichealMartinTD in Dublin, as I conclude the fourth week of my meetings with EU Leaders in my #TourdesCapitales. 🇮🇪 Ireland has a key role in the budget negotiations as the Council Presidency. I shared with the Taoiseach my conclusions from the exchanges with Leaders: • Leaders support the objective of an agreement by the end of the year – essential to ensure that there are no interruptions in funding for our farmers, regions, researchers, and citizens. • An agreement will require a balance, a package, between the size and distribution of the budget, the size of national contributions, and new European revenue streams. • The geopolitical environment has changed, and this new reality calls for a modernised budget, with a new structure. European citizens, the European economy, need stability and predictability. And we need to provide them with that stability and that predictability through a timely adoption of the next European budget. We are now entering a decisive phase, with the Irish Presidency presenting a new negotiating box in October. We must remember what is at stake. A strong budget is the cornerstone of Europe’s capacity to act. Iontach a bheith in Éirinn – agus ní neart go cur le chéile.

What matters for the Arctic matters for all EU Member States. The EU is committed to contributing to a safe, peaceful, resilient and prosperous Arctic region, for the benefit of the people who live there and of Europe as a whole. Geopolitical challenges in the region require a joint European response and coordinated action on climate action, sustainable development, resilience and security. We need to build a ring of partners from the Baltic to the Arctic and the North Atlantic to ensure a comprehensive, rules-based approach to security and defence across the region. Thank you, Prime Minister @PetteriOrpo, for convening the first-ever European Arctic Summit.
