Is Bitcoin still legal tender in El Salvador? I get asked this all the time, so I sat down with Salvadoran lawyer Jose Rodriguez, founder of @nodemanbtc, a Bitcoin-centric legal firm. Jose has compared more than 15 jurisdictions, and he says none of them give Bitcoin the same legal recognition as an asset you can pay with and settle contracts in. The IMF deal cut articles from the Bitcoin Law, but according to him, the law is still on the books. We also went back and forth on why the government still won't let you pay taxes in Bitcoin. It's the one thing I'm still hung up on, because it keeps companies here from legally running on a Bitcoin standard. A Canadian mom who didn't even know El Salvador was a country now helps families move here! 🇸🇻 @HagenaarsFamily wanted out of Canada during the pandemic. Portugal, the Netherlands, anywhere… Then a guy took her call from a hammock in Ecuador and said if he did it over again, he'd pick El Salvador. She'd never heard of it and owned zero Bitcoin. President @nayibbukele made THIS possible and almost nobody outside El Salvador knows it yet! A Salvadoran journalist covering the Bitcoin Law got tired of not understanding what he was writing about. @kealrive22 first heard people at El Zonte were accepting Bitcoin, googled it, hit the words "decentralized technology," and gave up on it entirely!
