Whitney Houston, One Hell of an Epiphany, and a Mirror.🩷🪄⭐️
Back before I quit drinking, during one of the messier chapters of my life, I was jamming out to Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All,” when I had one HELL of an epiphany.
If there was ever a song that defined who the fuck I am, THAT WAS IT.
“I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadows.”
And I meant that shit. Quite frankly, I think I made that decision straight out of the womb. 😂
I’ve lived a lot of lives in my 42 years. I’ve made mistakes, I’ve had to face some uncomfortable truths, and I’ve had plenty of opportunities to point fingers at everyone else.
But here’s something I’ve learned.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU.
Not what somebody said about you. Not what somebody thinks about you. Not how somebody else behaves. YOU.
And that includes how you respond when somebody pisses you off, hurts your feelings, questions your character, or tells a story about you that you don’t particularly like.
We live in a world where everybody has an explanation for their behavior, and somehow that explanation almost always starts with what somebody ELSE did.
At some point, you have to stop keeping score of everybody else’s bullshit and start taking inventory of your own.
That’s called accountability. And believe it or not, it’s LIBERATING.
Three years ago, I quit drinking. My life didn’t magically become perfect. But I started getting really comfortable with the woman looking back at me in the mirror.
And let me tell you something. I fucking LOVE her.
Not because she’s perfect. Not because she’s always right. Not because everybody likes her.
Because she’s MINE. Every mistake, every lesson, every scar, every triumph. I own ALL of it.
You can think I’m condescending, cliché, fake, or whatever else helps you sleep at night. I genuinely don’t care. I know the life I’ve lived, and I know who I am.
And here’s my unsolicited advice.
Look in the mirror. Really LOOK. Marinate in that shit. Get comfortable with the person staring back at you. And if loving that person feels like too much right now, start by learning to LIKE them.
But understand that loving yourself also means holding yourself accountable. It means being able to say, “I was wrong.” It means recognizing that just because somebody else behaved badly doesn’t give you a free pass to do the same.
YOUR ACTIONS ARE YOURS. YOUR REACTIONS ARE YOURS. YOUR CHOICES ARE YOURS.
And once you stop handing everybody else the responsibility for your happiness, your peace, and your behavior, life starts changing in some pretty incredible ways.
Because here’s the real mic drop.
You cannot control the shadows other people cast. But you sure as hell can decide whether you’re going to spend your life standing in them.
And THAT, my friends, is why loving yourself truly is the greatest love of all.
Choose joy. Choose accountability. Choose YOURSELF. 🩷
