It was wonderful to celebrate the 5th Annual Ohana Walk and another year of bringing our community together in the spirit of family, friendship, and healthy living.   Thank you to ACC Senior Services for continuing to create opportunities for our seniors and families to stay active, connected, and engaged. Five years of the Ohana Walk is a milestone worth celebrating, and I’m grateful to everyone who helped make this year’s event so special!

This week would have been Dr. Jane Wu's 63rd birthday. Instead, her family is grieving after she died by suicide following years of unjust, cruel scrutiny by the Trump administration. Dr. Wu spent her career pushing the boundaries of neuroscience and building a life in the country she chose to call home. Yet she was treated as a suspect simply because of her ancestry. She was never charged with wrongdoing, and the investigation into her ended without a finding of misconduct. But the damage was already done. Racial profiling of brilliant scientists destroys lives and careers, drives away talent, and makes our country weaker. We owe it to Dr. Wu to ensure programs like the China Initiative are never revived and no researcher is ever again treated as a suspect because of where they or their family come from.

This Mid-Autumn Festival, millions of people across the Asian diaspora and here in Jersey will gather to share gratitude, blessings, and delicious food with family and friends under the brightest full moon of the year. This week I joined @ajsocal_ and @jamuseum to discuss the state of immigration in our country. Trump's anti-immigrant agenda has trampled on the rights and due process of our immigrant communities, particularly AANHPI immigrants. Since Trump took office again, deportations of Asian immigrants have skyrocketed by 1,103%. In 2025 alone, deportations of Southeast Asian elders rose more than 20-fold compared to the year before. Our immigrant communities contribute to every facet of American life. I will always stand with them.

One month ago, catastrophic flooding tore through communities across northern and central Nepal, devastating 1.6 million people. Today I led a bipartisan letter with @RepGraceMeng & @CongressmanRaja urging Trump and DHS Secretary Mullin to immediately grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Nepal. TPS will allow Nepalis already in the U.S. to stay and work here while it's too dangerous to return home. Forcing Nepali families back to a home that no longer exists is cruel. We need to act now. Janine and I are horrified by the brutal attack on Mr. Singh, a Sikh truck driver and member of our Sacramento community who was stabbed 17 times at a rest stop in Wyoming. We are praying for his full recovery and grateful to the family whose quick actions helped save his life. Law enforcement has not identified a motive, but we cannot ignore the troubling rise in hate and rhetoric targeting Sikh and South Asian Americans across our nation. Just days before this attack, the Department of Homeland Security posted a racist caricature of a Sikh truck driver telling "Mr. Singh" to "get off our roads" and "self-deport or find out." Rhetoric from the highest levels of our government carries weight. When administration officials use the power and platform of the federal government to single out Sikh identity and portray an entire community as dangerous, unwanted, or less American, they fan the flames of hate and reinforce stereotypes that can have real-life consequences for Sikh Americans and the broader South Asian community. Violence and hate against Sikh Americans, South Asian Americans, or any community must be unequivocally condemned.
