The point of tariffs isn't trying to make small changes to the rate of inflation. The point is trying to reindustrialize and fix the United States massive imbalance of trade. Which was caused, in large part, by heavy tariffs imposed by our trading partners. The US had high tariffs while we were industrializing. China has had high tariffs during their economic miracle. Every other developed economy (Britain, France, Germany, South Korea, etc.) had high tariffs when they were industrializing. Then, the US dropped to having very low tariffs. Our industrial base has hollowed out, wages stagnated, jobs are going overseas, but many economists continue to call for even lower tariffs. Could it have to do with the fact that tariffs are bad for multinational corporations, who fund the institutions that employ these economists?
