This case has pulled back the curtain on a lot of folks' ability for moral reasoning: pure emotivism. Alas, MacIntyre proved correct.

People are really losing their ability to think logically here. What these women are not saying is “yeah it was horrific but I don’t care she should be freeeeee” What they’re explaining is that the prosecution had the burden of proof to show that Lindsay was completely in control of her actions and that an insanity plea was unsustainable. Instead they spent too much time simply trying to show how horrific the deaths were, as if the jury would be so horrified they’d rule out insanity just to get her. If you’re mad about the result, be mad at the prosecution for not making a convincing argument.

I am getting so sick of the stupid takes on the Lindsay Clancy trial. The state had shit evidence for a first degree murder charge. They therefore should have let her plead out. No, we should not abolish the insanity defense. Yes, brain conditions exist that reduce your culpability. No, it wouldn't be justice to hold people accountable for actions they don't have control over. Yes, the "beyond a reasonable doubt" standard is a good one and no you don't get to just throw it in the trash because you don't like the crime. (And no, the lone guy on the jury who did exactly this is not a hero). No, you aren't a good person for diminishing postpartum psychosis just because you're a man or a woman who had PPD or an easy or difficult postpartum or no childbearing at all. No, Massachusetts does not have and should not have the death penalty. And no, that one case in Maine 70 years ago doesn't mean it's a terrible idea to let a woman who murdered her children get psychiatric treatment instead of prison time today. And no, thinking rationally about legal standards and accurately about the meaning of basic vocabulary words doesn't mean you think people should kill their children and it doesn't make you evil. Would you all please just shut up with these unoriginal awful bad terrible takes. Three children are dead and you're all treating it like the first thought experiment you've been exposed to in decades and you can't be bothered to do anything with it except half ass it. Ugh
