“Easy Lover” has a remarkably spontaneous origin. The song was written by Philip Bailey, Phil Collins and bassist Nathan East near the end of the sessions for Bailey's 1984 solo album, Chinese Wall, which Collins was producing. East started playing a riff on the piano and within about 20 minutes the three musicians had the basic song. They recorded a rough demo that same night, still singing the temporary phrase “choosy lover.” Collins took the idea home, returned with the lyrics and the title “Easy Lover,” and the finished track came together in roughly 48 hours. Released in the United States in November 1984 and in the UK in February 1985, “Easy Lover” became a huge international hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending four weeks at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart. It also reached No. 3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 5 on the Mainstream Rock chart. The song was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 1986 Grammy Awards.
