Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the building collapse in Eastleigh. We hope those trapped are rescued safely and the injured receive urgent medical attention. This tragedy raises serious questions about construction standards and the enforcement of building regulations in Nairobi. The County Government must explain how such buildings receive approval and whether proper inspections are conducted. Allegations of bribery and negligence in the approval process must be independently investigated. Those found culpable must be held accountable. The lives of Nairobi residents cannot be sacrificed at the altar of corruption and regulatory failure.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja says the multi-storey building that collapsed along 9th Street in Eastleigh was under construction without the required approvals, despite an application for a 15-storey building with a basement having been submitted. Sakaja says the county has forwarded documentation to the DCI for investigations and called for accountability among the developer and professionals involved, including the architect and engineer on record.
