18-year old Texas high school football player Aiden Craig tragically died after suffering a medical emergency during a physical fitness test while training to become a U.S. Marine.
Craig had recently graduated from Wylie High School, where he was a two-year varsity football player. The defensive end recorded 50 tackles, four sacks, six QB pressures and six tackles for loss during his senior season, earning Second Team All-District honors.
Just weeks after graduation, Craig enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was 47 days into recruit training when he suffered the medical emergency on August 1. He was hospitalized and died four days later on August 5. The Marine Corps posthumously awarded him the title of Marine.
His family is now honoring his memory by establishing an educational endowment through the Wylie ISD Education Foundation, hoping Aidenโs name and legacy will continue helping students in his community.

What did we learn this week?
The future isn't about making every system โAI-powered.โ
It's about knowing where AI belongs โ and where it doesn't.
A few lessons:
โข Don't use expensive AI reasoning to test something deterministic software can prove.
โข AI agents need identities, scoped permissions, revocable credentials, and audit trails.
โข Never pass secrets through URLs, chat, prompts, logs, or source code.
โข โMergedโ โ โdeployed.โ
โข โDeployedโ โ โfinished.โ
Finished means deployed, tested, observable, documented, and verified.
โข Every production system should be able to answer: โWhat version is actually running?โ
โข A TODO list becomes an operational system when it closes the loop:
Intent โ Build โ Merge โ Deploy โ Test โ Verify โ Document โ Clean up.
And the biggest lesson:
Don't make every component do everything.
Rules define intent.
Source control records implementation.
Secure services handle identity and authorization.
Integration infrastructure connects and observes.
AI reasons.
Humans retain authority.
The interesting challenge isn't just building smarter AI.
It's building better systems around it.

A few days ago I started an experiment.
The question was pretty simple:
Could I build a useful, functional website that solved a real problem โ without actually having a web server?
The problem I picked was one I've run into repeatedly: finding useful GIS API endpoints.
So I started building TocsinData.io.
No traditional web hosting. No Apache or Nginx server sitting somewhere serving the site. No VPS behind it.
The site and API gateway run at the edge using Cloudflare Workers, with the project maintained through GitHub.
And then the experiment got a little out of hand.
It stopped being just a directory of GIS APIs.
TocsinData.io is becoming a gateway to useful public data from multiple sources, organized behind predictable endpoints.
Right now that includes data and services covering things like:
โข USGS earthquake data
โข Canadian geographic names
โข FCC Census and geographic lookups
โข NOAA coastal and ocean station metadata
โข NASA natural-event categories
โข National Weather Service weather and alert data
โข World Bank country and reference data
โข NHTSA vehicle recalls
โข GBIF species and taxonomy matching
โข FEMA disaster declarations
โข OpenAlex research/publication metadata
โข UK police force and crime-category reference data
โข USAspending government reference data
โข Federal Register agency information
โข UK bank holidays
And that's only the beginning.
GIS data now has its own namespace, while non-GIS public APIs have their own home as well.
The goal isn't to blindly proxy every free API on the Internet. Each source has to be reviewed, bounded and handled according to its own technical and usage requirements.
What started as:
"Can I make a useful GIS API website without buying hosting?"
has turned into:
"How much useful public data can I make easier for humans, software and AI systems to discover and use โ while still not having a conventional web server?"
Apparently quite a lot.
