In his final address, the outgoing Secretary-General of the United Nations told the General Assembly yesterday that Gaza represented “a scale of death and destruction unlike anything I have seen” in the job. Even by the most hostile tallies, that means something like 70,000 dead, a number that includes a large share of Hamas fighters. Ever the propagandist, António Guterres wants the world to believe that this is the worst thing he has witnessed in nearly ten years running the world’s most powerful humanitarian machine. OK. For the second Yom Kippur running, Jews in Manchester have been targeted by terrorists. This year, the attack was foiled. But the attacks keep coming. That’s because essentially nothing has changed in law enforcement policy since this time last year. The Government has found plenty of time for signalling faux virtue on foreign policy but has yet to take the fight to Islamists and other extremists fuelling the life-and-death antisemitism crisis right here at home. Two men in their 30s were reportedly arrested in Newton Street, Manchester, on Sunday on suspicion of a plot to target the local Jewish community at the beginning of Yom Kippur – the Day of Atonement, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. We understand that they have been transferred to a police station in London, where they remain in custody. We are grateful to the authorities for their vigilance. But the Jewish community cannot rely on that forever. The authorities need to get lucky every time and the terrorists only once. As I wrote this I wondered what will happen when eventually someone says to a jury, "I murdered that Jew to stop the genocide". There is an attack on British Law, that is replacing the blind nature of justice with a set of emotive tactics based on the tenants of Palestinianism. Yesterday, Ed Miliband told Parliament that Israel bears sole responsibility for the ongoing catastrophe in Gaza, with no mention of Hamas's use of human shields, stealing aid, or continued refusal to disarm. The UK government's actions against Israel will make things worse for the people of Gaza and for Britain's Jews. The grip of Hamas over Gaza will tighten as they are once again encouraged to believe the world is on their side. And as Britain's Chief Rabbi has already warned, the UK government's measures will make things worse for Britain's Jews by "emboldening those... who use hatred as a weapon against [them]."
