My prediction: modern UI is about to look far more cyberpunk/sci-fi than ever before. Think Iron Man's JARVIS HUD: hyper-fast, dark screens with high-contrast colour, rich audio, motion graphics etc.
With AI handling most commands without manual input, the input side will get simpler, but the output will become richer to support human-in-the-loop feedback. Keeping pace with the AI will be a defining factor. Previously, input was key; now output will be. That means more expressive sounds and visuals. Basic dropdowns and input fields will soon look like relics of the Stone Age.
It makes me wonder whether our popular approaches to building UI can meet this need unless they evolve very quickly in performance and capability. The barriers to composing these systems are certainly falling, but which UI tools are powerful enough to deliver high-fidelity modern UI? Is the DOM-driven model even the right one? Is JavaScript's JIT model performant enough? Will we go back to native out of necessity (probably WASM)?
If you've been reading about this recently, please share. I'd love to keep up with the conversation on this future-UI topic. Anything that's discussing practical tooling for near and far-future UI.
