An article from Manchester City’s own website dated 21 September 2018 has been brought to my attention. Andy Burnham was in China at the end of a trade delegation when, as Mayor of Greater Manchester, he joined the Manchester City delegation for the opening of City Football Group’s second office in China. Burnham said, “City Football Group’s work in Shenzhen demonstrates the football organisation’s commitment to China.” He then described CFG and the Chinese football authorities as “a perfect partnership.” That raises an obvious question for me, why was the Mayor of Greater Manchester effectively promoting City Football Group’s international expansion in China? Given the questions now being asked about Burnham’s links with Manchester City and its ownership, this deserves closer scrutiny.

A family on full Universal Credit, living in subsidised housing, paying no council tax, can take the same four people to the same Tower for £1 a ticket — £4 total — under the 'inclusive access' schemes most major UK attractions now run. The working family pays the full £200 day out AND covers — through their taxes — the £196 discount the benefits family gets on the same trip. Whatever the original intention of those schemes, this is the structure most UK working families are now living inside. Pay the full bill, then watch the people next door enjoy the day out you can't take your own kids to.
