This in my experience is a recurring issue in Germany, a certain tendency to believe that the current state of things (be it party landscape, industry product or bureaucratic procedure) is somehow the endpoint of history, and not a temporary step on the path to something else.

Wie beruhigend. 150 Unterschriften – und schon ist das Antisemitismusproblem der Berliner Linken offenbar verschwunden. Nur wenige Tage nach Jom Kippur wäre vielleicht etwas weniger Selbstgerechtigkeit und etwas mehr Selbstreflexion angebracht. „Jalla, Jalla, Intifada“, Todesrufe gegen israelische Soldaten und immer neue antisemitische Grenzüberschreitungen werden nicht dadurch harmloser, dass man einen offenen Brief unterschreibt. Jüdisches Leben ist vielfältig. Natürlich. Aber 150 Stimmen sprechen ebenso wenig für „die Juden“ wie irgendeine andere einzelne Gruppe. Antisemitismus von rechts, aus islamistischen Kreisen und von links muss beim Namen genannt werden – ohne Relativierung, ohne Ausreden und ohne politische Scheuklappen. Eine Brandmauer gegen Antisemitismus hat keine bevorzugte Himmelsrichtung.

Bari Weiss just finished speaking at a ceremony in Berlin ahead of Peter Thiel being awarded the Axel Springer 2026 Award. (Sorry for the poor video quality.) Weiss listed out some of her differences with Thiel. Among them: "And of course there's a difference in our attitude, at least sometimes, toward the press, and to the vital role that it plays in maintaining a liberal democracy. I view it as essential. It's my life's work. I see it as an instrument of liberty. And as an engine of progress that deserves to be in invested in and perfected."
