Ten years ago, a major bank offering Bitcoin, Ether, and Solana would have been unthinkable. Today it was a Thursday. This is one of those moments the industry will point back to.
Morgan Stanley's E*TRADE just switched on spot crypto trading for clients, and it's a pretty big deal. For the first time, people can directly buy, sell, and hold Bitcoin, Ether, and Solana on the platform, not just a fund that tracks their prices, and it now sits right alongside their stocks and retirement balances on a platform serving 8.6 million households.
This is one of the largest wealth franchises in the world putting crypto directly into the hands of everyday investors.
For years the industry argued about whether traditional finance would ever really commit to digital assets. Morgan Stanley just answered that for everyone. A firm sitting on trillions in client money wouldn't put Bitcoin a click away from your retirement account on a whim, this is something they did because they can see which way finance is going.
And this launch didn't happen in isolation, look at the last twelve months alone: a spot Bitcoin ETF, stablecoin reserve services, retail spot trading, and now a national trust bank being built to bring custody in-house. A Wall Street giant is constructing an entire digital asset business, and moving fast enough that competitors now have to respond. Watch what happens after this.
I still talk to plenty of people who are comfortable waiting to see how all of this shakes out. I understand the instinct, but the ground keeps shifting under that position. The trouble with waiting is that customers aren't waiting. The moment people can get crypto from a firm they already trust, the firms sitting it out are the ones losing ground.
A good part of my work at KPMG lives in exactly that space: helping organizations engage with digital assets responsibly, with the controls and clarity to back it up. The questions have moved well past whether any of this is real.
For a long time, crypto had to prove itself to institutions, but this is one of those moments that flips this. Now we are seeing that institutions are building their credibility around whether they can offer it. The burden of proof definitely moved.
