"Defence itself is changing. Modern military capability increasingly depends upon technologies and production systems that have strong civilian applications: electronics, communications, autonomous systems, drones, advanced materials, batteries, power electronics, software and sophisticated manufacturing."

Brilliant column from David Bailey. My mind goes back to 2020 and the depths of fear about Covid-19. It was found that the UK didn't have anything like the number of ventilators that was believed to be needed. The @HVM_Catapult, under the leadership of Richard Elsy, brought together disparate elements of the auto, aero, defence and electronics supply chains, who built - & redesigned, let us not forget - 13,000 ventilators in just 15 weeks. So what Prof Bailey suggests isn't pipedreaming; it has been done before, in several different ways.

The largest financial commitment in the company's history - £500m across four UK sites - will ensure all future McLarens are British-built. The huge investment will enable the supercar manufacturer to: ✅ Build engines in-house for the first time in its history. ✅ Expand its vehicle assembly capacity (including a new factory) as the manufacturer broadens its portfolio with with a new generation of models, including a new Performance SUV. ✅ Scale its world-leading carbon fibre capability by doubling the size of its McLaren Composites Technology Centre in South Yorkshire. ✅ Build a new state-of-the-art paint shop, providing greater personalisation than ever before. ✅ Create 1,000 new jobs, safeguard existing roles and support at least 3,000 jobs in the wider UK economy. The investment has also funded a new design and innovation hub, the McLaren Creative Centre in Bicester, Oxfordshire, and a new testing and vehicle development site at MIRA in the Midlands.
