We are constantly told about hundreds of new farms and outposts, a “settlement revolution,” and an irreversible transformation of the West Bank. Yet behind the political fanfare and the sweeping takeover of land, the demographic reality remains remarkably stubborn. A full 84.5% of the Jewish population beyond the Green Line, including East Jerusalem, lives within 10 kilometers of it. About 65%—nearly two-thirds—live within just 5 kilometers. The meaning is clear: a large majority of Israelis still live close to the Green Line, in areas that could, in principle, be included in agreed land swaps under a permanent-status agreement—without undermining territorial contiguity or the fabric of life of either population. The overall picture is also far removed from the propaganda: Israelis constitute only about 15% of the West Bank’s population, excluding East Jerusalem, while the Palestinian built-up area is approximately nine times larger than the Jewish built-up area. The outposts and farms deepen control over the territory and intensify friction, violence, and the political obstacles to an agreement—but they do not create an “irreversible demographic reality.” The two-state solution remains possible. Those seeking to thwart it are doing so through deliberate policy, not through demographic inevitability.
