TBH the question of Hazrat Aisha’s age at consummation of her marriage with Prophet Muhammad has always bothered me. While the believer side of me wants to accept Ghamidi/Ahmadi/Perwaizi/modernist Muslim revisionist argument that Aisha was older at the time of consummation (and their arguments are logical), as a lawyer and sometimes amateur historian I have always prided myself on going by hard evidence and historical record- that is the historical method as well as the legal method. I can’t criticise the likes of Ishtiaq Ahmed and Orya Maqbool Jan for their bald faced denials of sources and evidence (for recent history) and then turn a blind eye to sources available on early Islamic history - namely the Hadith literature. That would be hypocrisy. There is no good reason to impugn Bukhari and Muslim and other sources. So when you weigh the evidence the conclusion that Aisha was 6 when she got married and 9 when the marriage was consummated becomes inescapable. The argument that this was not unusual for its time is further complicated when we consider that Prophet Muhammad refused to marry off his own daughter Fatima citing her youth. Nevertheless child marriage was quite common in the world and btw is still allowed in many states in the US in the 21st century. These are good defenses but when you go down that route, you are admitting that the master signifier of Islam is not the exemplar but just another historical figure albeit probably amongst the most important figures in human history given the impact Islam has had on the world. Enough said but where does that leave the believer side of me … straddling belief and disbelief. Maybe Wahabis have it right ie the status of Muhammad as first amongst equals. I don’t know. Just some thoughts.
