September 5 1930: Airship R101 crashes in Beauvais (France) 48 of 54 aboard die. On its maiden voyage, ship was at low altitude when it suddenly dived, hit ground and caught fire.
Inquiry pointed most likely cause was a gas leak due to severe weather, resulting in loss of altitude, impacting the ground and causing a severe fire.
However, the investigation also hinted the airship hadn´t been properly tested before its debut overseas flight, a lengthy crossing from England to Pakistan.
At the time, R101 was the largest airship in the world. Among the dead on the accident were key staff on the British airship program, effectively ending the country´s project in this aviation field.
