I don't love and don't respect DHH, but he is right that a country is allowed to have a restrictive immigration policy.
I'm saying this as someone whose Estonian visa wasn't extended on the basis of being randomly declared "a threat to public order" in the rejection letter in early 2022.
So what? It's their country, they're free to not let me in if they don't like my Russian passport.
DHH isn't talking (at least in the provided video) about treating immigrants badly, he's talking about not letting people in randomly in the first place, because the current state of affairs is that randomly let-in people tend to fuck things up.

A friend recently came from Spain to Montenegro and I had to explain to her that she doesn't need to constantly worry about her stuff around here, because petty crime is almost non-existent.
My building is open 24/7, no security, no fences, and the PC on the first floor has been there for the last 4 years. People leave their car windows open, leave their stuff on the beach and go swimming.
It's safe to walk around at night, whether it's a public place or in the middle of nowhere. The country is packed with guns (#6 in the world per capita) and is a primary transit hub for drugs entering the EU -- and is much, much safer than European capitals.
Whites developed some absolutely insane cuckoldery and are no longer allowed to prefer to be around people of the same origin, unlike any other race.
It's idiotic and hypocritical.
I love and respect dhh as much as any other young programmer who is inspired by his love for computers.
But I can't help but imagine that, as a black person, he would not want to see me living in Denmark or the larger Europe, regardless of my contribution to the country.
He would prefer Europe to look like it did in the 80s, or to be as homogeneous as Japan, as he said on the Lex pod.
He mentions having a positive contribution to the society, but after listening to him more, it seems to me that he cares far less about that than about whether the immigrant looks more like him.
That means, even if I contribute to their economy, pay my taxes, raise my family there, and integrate into the culture, he would not really want to see me move there with my immediate black family, because I would be disturbing their homogeneity.
I thought for days about what that actually means. It means no matter what I do, no matter how much I give, the door will always come with an asterisk. "You're welcome, but only if you physically blend in."
I lived in London and Amsterdam. I contributed positively to their economies, that's why they let me in, in the first place. And I like to think I am well assimilated into the society and culture.
But because I do not look like what Britain looked like 100 years ago, nor does my immediate family, dhh would rather not have me live in Europe, or even marry there!?
By that logic, would you also tell Jude Bellingham he doesn't belong? Or Sir Lewis Hamilton? Or Marcus Rashford, who fed millions of British children during the pandemic when the government wouldn't? If dhh's version of Europe has no room for people who look like them, then what he is really saying is that contribution doesn't matter. Appearance does.
And I get that not everyone assimilates equally, and that it is okay to have standards for who you want in your turf. Every nation has a right to shape its immigration policy. That is not what I am arguing against.
But why do it in a way that clearly shows favour and discrimination in equal measure based on how a person looks? Why not simply judge from person to person, instead of categorizing whole groups and communities?
Europe immensely benefited from Africa and its resources. They went to Africa and laid the entire continent to siege, extracting minerals, labour, and wealth for centuries.
My country is still reeling from those effects to date, having gained independence only about half a century ago.
And yet, merely 50 years later, Europe is so harsh to Africans that they do not want them, even legally, accessing opportunities in Europe?
There is something deeply contradictory about benefiting from a continent for centuries and then shutting its people out when they come seeking the same prosperity your ancestors built on their backs.
Britain has a huge healthcare crisis and a massive shortage of healthcare workers. Guess who is the backbone of that? Immigrants, most of them African and South Asian. They work night shifts, they hold the system together, and they do it quietly.
Isn't it irresponsible to walk into a hospital and say, "I do not like the demographics of this hospital. I would have preferred if it looked like it did in the 80s"?
I used to think people had a problem with illegal immigration. But no, it is not illegal immigration they oppose. They simply do not want immigration from certain parts of the world. God forbid if you are just a good human being from that part of the world yearning for better opportunities.
You can have a PhD, speak the language fluently, pay more in taxes than most locals, and still be told you don't belong, simply because you don't look the part.
Why won't we just vet individuals and give everyone a fair chance? Judge the person, not the group. Character, not colour. Contribution, not complexion. I beleive this is not a radical idea, it is the bare minimum of fairness.
To dhh, please don't block me for asking this 😅, and I really do hope I am wrong and that you clarify this. Would you happily let me and my black family become your neighbours in Copenhagen, if I don't have a problem with assimilation? Do you feel the same about the USA?
I am genuinely asking these questions and I welcome discourse here bc I really do want to believe dhh is a good person and he does not have a problem with people who are not white.
And if the answer is no, then what we are really saying is that there is no amount of effort that makes someone like me acceptable. And that is a huge problem for all of us.
I hope I am wrong.

Getting tired of the cursed timeline with imbecilic tech influencers spreading their fiercely retarded takes and facing barely any pushback.
The most powerful AGI imaginable will still not be infallible. There's very obvious value in risk management, and splitting tasks into smaller ones is a natural and reliable way to manage risk.
Compilers enable task splitting. Instead of mapping your ideas directly onto the machine, they let you map them onto an expressive high-level language, with the remaining translation being an entirely separate and generally well-understood task.
But no, the Ruby on Snails guy would rather ignore risk management and burn a shitload of tokens dealing directly with bloated machine code instead of tidy high-level code suitable for reasoning, generation and consumption by LLMs.
Rust is a good prompt compilation target for the moment, but so is C++. And soon assembler. Then microcode. Myopic to think we're going to stop the agentic drill bit until it reaches computing bedrock.

Once Opus 5.5 realized searching my whole drive wasn't the best idea, it proceeded to write a whole bunch of C to solve my Haskell challenge and caused a segfault, at which point my subscription ran out.
What a spectacle.
Maybe I should just stream Opus solving challenges.

developing with AI when you're incompetent vs developing with AI when you're competent
The reason why I'm working on that project on and off is that it's depressing as fuck. I hadn't done anything this depressing since before I wrote enterprise Java for a living.
Code generation is alright, it works. But I also need the clanker to write prompts for subclankers and oh my god it's soul-sucking.
The clanker doesn't understand the stochastic nature of AI. It feels like the subclanker will reasonably follow the prompt. It of course won't.
So you explain it to the clanker and it just puts a wall of prompt legalese into markdown files, making the subclanker reward-hack and behave even worse.
I've seen an entire ping-pong session where the clanker would encourage subclankers to do something, then forbid it completely, then encourage again etc, because each attempt would create a different set of issues.
At every step your instructions get distorted to the point where they're unrecognizable and in the end the subclanker is doing exactly what it's not supposed to be doing.
And on top of that there's the factor of LLMs being chaotic. There's never a causal relationship between the quality of the prompt and the quality of the final result. Maybe it just derailed this one time after the prompt was changed, despite the change being positive on average.
So I never actually know if things are getting better or not. Plus, I have to rely on the clanker's judgement to determine how good the results are, because if I tried to analyze them manually, I'd just drown in all that data. So I can't even be sure that a good result is a good result.
Literally nothing is certain or trustworthy.
And the worst part is that all this nonsense and suffering is still worth it, so I can't just quit.

I usually argue by reductio ad absurdum, but sometimes I encounter a statement so fiercely retarded I cannot make it any more absurd.
Hearing an English sentence is a linear process.
Understanding an algorithm moving across multiple levels of abstraction, mutating global state concurrently, backtracking, modifying the very data being processed etc etc -- is not a linear process.
And may in fact be an "I can't understand" kind of situation.
This should be entirely obvious to anyone with a detectable amount of matter between the ears.
Why is this man who voluntarily chose Java to implement a game considered authoritative on anything related to computing?
Saying there's code so complex you can't understand it is like saying there's sentences so English you can't hear them.

I believe Haskell’s relative unpopularity stems from poor state-handling patterns. Sure, we have the tardis monad, which allows state to travel both forwards and backwards, but it lacks reentrance.
To address this, I’ve started working on a reentrant tardis monad: retardis.
