"Von Neumann would carry on a conversation with my 3 year old son, and the two of them would talk as equals, and I sometimes wondered if he used the same principle when he talked to the rest of us" - Edward Teller
The future light cone of discoveries rounds up to 100% engineering, as the set of physics rules that govern our reality is very tiny compared to what can be done with those rules.
The reason I didn’t choose a career in physics, my favorite subject, is that I would be stuck waiting for a new collider or telescope. Better to advance technologies that ultimately enable discovery of new physics.
Nearly thirty years as a published writer and this is the first time I’ve used a new device that became instantly irreplaceable (no, I’m not being paid to say this.) It feels like using ink and paper and does everything I want it to do and nothing I don’t need it to do.
I know I’m late to the party, but my son gave it to me on my birthday so to me it’s a very recent revelation. It’s already joined my laptop at the top of my Things I Dread Losing list. #supernote
Not one single person of average intelligence or above, is arguing in good faith that men can become women, should be allowed in women’s sports, be imprisoned with women, or be allowed in woman’s shelters. If you’re smart and hold those positions, truth is not your top priority.
I was amused to hear in a review that the new Supergirl film featured a green sun. I guess the writers were unaware that stars are well approximated as black body radiators which means they radiate over a range of wavelengths. A star whose temperature maximizes radiation in the wavelength corresponding to green would also radiate sufficient red and blue light that the overall effect would be perceived as white.
Dmitri Mendeleev, creator of the Periodic Table, was nominated for the Nobel Prize 9 times but never won because a scientist he once criticized sat on the committee and blocked him every single time.
🚨BREAKING: Another TikToker reveals they were offered $200 to join the nationwide “No Kings Day” protest in NYC—targeting ICE and President Trump’s deportation policies.
Writing in 1979, science fiction author Gordon R. Dickson looked ahead to 2050 to describe the evolution of the programmable calculator into a general purpose tool that was the size of a typical handheld device. It was a powerful general purpose computer that had a built-in AI (Siri/Alexa) assistant, was integrated into the global data/communication network, supported voice and keyboard input, and had all of the PDA tools such as calendars and to-do lists. The only thing he missed was a touch screen; his device had a keyboard-screen configuration. He saw it as a computer-cum-phone rather than a phone-cum-computer, which is a trivial difference. calc.fjk.ch/library/thank_yo…
As a general rule, whenever your intuition conflicts with that of an economist, bet on your intuition.
Economists are reverse indicators: they are ~always wrong.
I think one of the most interesting moments of the podcast with @johnfetterman was when we were talking about immigration. I think everyone should understand exactly what is happening.
As much as you can personally, intellectually, & morally dislike Trump, a news outlet that promotes a given candidate over another becomes automatically PROPAGANDA.
Half of Donald Trump's former cabinet members have refused to endorse him. The most senior Republican senator calls him “despicable”. Both his former chief-of-staff and former head of the joint chiefs call him a fascist. We are endorsing Kamala Harris econ.st/4ef9Abf 👇
