Political Budget Scam Alert Don't be fooled! This is how it works: Politicians create a budget. It includes critical services like police, fire and transportation. It also includes items with broad support like parks and schools. But it also includes items that are "nice to have" at best and in many cases items that could not pass the voters. When the budget has a shortfall, the politicians know that if they say "We need to raise taxes for this 'nice to have' program or some other pork" the voters will not support the tax increase. So they hold up some critical item, like fire or transportation and say "If we don't raise taxes we will have to lay off firefighters". Bull! They could easily cut the "nice to haves" just like we have to cut items from our own budget, but instead they try to trick/scare voters into thinking the tax increase is necessary.
