They were useless. Tried to rebrand themselves to “agiles coaches” too with a 30% salary bump. Basically employed consultants. You can still find them in larger enterprises who still in the process of implementing “the Spotify model” from 2005 or something.

I think scrum masters basically just do administrative stuff for a team because so many actual direct managers either don't know how to or don't want to manage down. Note how the direct manager isn't even in this meme.

Considering most Scrum Masters were qualified through a two day course that basically, at best, simply required that you remained awake or via a test that most anyone could pass after spending a few hours reading related information, this is probably a good thing.
