Emmanuel Macron says American free speech is "the opposite of free speech." In his view, freedom only exists inside a "common framework" set by the state. He compared posting an insult online to hitting someone in the street. Those are different things, because one is speech and the other is violence. He wants people punished for posting "nonsense," with state-backed fact-checkers deciding what qualifies. He wants a verified identity behind every social media account. He has written to Ursula von der Leyen demanding the DSA be enforced "much faster, much more forcefully." reclaimthenet.org/macron-urg…

Apparently all of these “AI is escaping containment” stories are actually just AI researchers not knowing jack squat about the absolutely most basic security practices.

Everything this version of Zuckerberg says is accurate, & just like in real life Bill Burr is self righteously advocating for the most evil position possible while he's to stupid to realize he's the bad guy

Her comments are not random. This is part of a well funded and carefully organized campaign to demonize open models and our civil liberties in DC. Multiple Senate staffers have told me that outside groups are requesting meetings to provide “demonstrations” where open source models are used to attack simulated hospital websites and demand bitcoin as ransom. These are cheap scare tactics funded by groups seeking to control open systems. In reality, cyber defenders rely on open models daily to find critical vulnerabilities before attackers get there first. If these groups are successful, we will all be poorer, less free, and more vulnerable to adversaries with increasingly capable systems.
We're used to thinking of open-source models as an unadulterated good. But in the case of AI, they can actually pose additional dangers, as @ReidHoffman and I got into at #CGI2026. I appreciated this nuanced discussion.

I'm watching the scene and every time the Zuckerberg character rebuts some awful pro-censorship line from Bill Burr I'm muttering "based" and "even more based" and "yes this" and "exactly right, yes." I suspect I'm not alone.

Riding the huggingface AI safety wave to justify a crackdown on open source is abominable. Not only was an open-source platform victimized in that attack, but they relied on open-source models to defend. These people know this, of course. They simply don't care.

Amtrak so bad it’s causing flight delays now …
UPDATE: An Amtrak construction crew accidentally cut into a fiber line in New Jersey which caused a telecom outage and forced FAA to pause flights in the Northeast. Right now: - Flights are resuming at LGA and PHL - Flights into EWR, JFK, and Teterboro Airport are paused This incident underscores the need for additional funding to modernize aging infrastructure and prevent disruptions like this in the future. Follow @FAANews for updates.
Community note
Amtrak stated the cut was by a New Jersey Transit contractor on NJ Transit property, not an Amtrak crew. businessinsider.com/faa-outage-new… nbcnewyork.com/new-jersey/new… Verizon said contractors cut its cable running adjacent to an Amtrak rail line. reuters.com/world/us/faa-h…

Sobering stat in this NYT piece: "More than 4,000 people have died of drug overdoses in San Francisco since 2020, mostly from fentanyl, far more than those who died of Covid-19, homicides and car crashes combined during the same time span."

"agentic AI is bad and only exists because AI companies need to make money" is such an ill informed take and horrible policy direction.
🚨 OBAMA ON AI: "If we are thinking about AI just in terms of how do we cure cancer or get better energy, you can do that without having agentic AI and having it just roaming free in the internet. The reason you are doing that is because you have to market a product that people will pay money for. That’s a misalignment between what our society needs and the commercial imperatives that these companies are facing, not because necessarily they’re trying to do bad things, but because they’ve got to justify these valuations. So, that’s one more reason why it is really important for us to have a competent government and a serious bipartisan conversation around this issue, and we have to do it fast. And I would encourage voters to pay attention to this. If somebody does not have a serious plan for how to deal with this, then they’re not meeting the moment, and you should probably look for somebody else."

This is Trust & Safety 2.0. The last time we had media-generated panics like this (with Russiagate and Covid), social media companies created “trust & safety” teams to censor conservative and dissident voices. Those hires worked with left-wing NGOs like the SPLC to police public discourse and do an end-run around the First Amendment. It almost worked, until Elon bought Twitter and exposed the whole game in the Twitter Files. This time the plan is to embed unfireable EA minders inside every AI company as the new trust-and-safety layer. The censorship and control will be far more comprehensive, but also more subtle. Anytime they don’t get what they want, this unaccountable NGO layer (with the veneer of “trust the experts” pseudoscience) will shriek to the press that the AI company is risking humanity, and they will be celebrated as “whistleblowers.” These groups haven’t earned our trust, and their agenda is not our safety. aievaluatorforum.org/initiat…

Paramount news is basically the death of Hollywood. And it's not a murder, it's a suicide. What's going on in state of California is eery and strange; it's what happens when a single party faces no opposition (because they've entirely stamped it out). More than that, the destruction of Hollywood seems to be politically motivated--it's throwing out the white male baby with the bathwater of the entire globe's default entertainment. Pretty f--ing insane. Andreessen called this article "concerning." mamathemagazine.com/the-inex…

Anthropic and OpenAI cannot become profitable unless they can reduce the ratio of training cost to inference profits. In the long run, their survival may depend on outlawing competitive open source models. This can only be done under the guise of safety regulation.

Being a leftist has to be exhausting. Just constant fear mongering about the end of the world, pandemics, climate change, and now linear algebra. Deeply neurotic and unhealthy.
