Avalanche's co-founder helped build a proof-of-work currency six years before Bitcoin...
Emin Gün Sirer (@el33th4xor) co-designed Karma at Cornell in 2003 with two of his students. His bios call it the first currency to mint coins through proof-of-work, though Wei Dai's 1998 b-money proposal sketched the idea earlier.
Karma aimed to stop freeloading on file-sharing networks by tracking what each user gave and took, long before Bitcoin introduced proof-of-work money.
In 2013, he and Ittay Eyal found a flaw in Bitcoin's mining rules. A group of miners could secretly hold back the blocks they found, then release them at the right moment to wipe out rivals' work. Even a minority of miners could earn more than they should. The attack is now known as "selfish mining".
He later co-founded @AvaLabs, the company behind Avalanche (@avax), and still runs it as CEO.

🚨 Big Pumpfun ruling out of SDNY today and every claim against Solana Labs, the Solana Foundation, and the executives named alongside them got dismissed.
Judge McMahon decided the motions to dismiss in the Pump fun class action, here's what it says:
The two memecoins involved in the Complaint weren't securities... but not for the reason everyone's about to claim. Plaintiffs said the tokens were "investment contracts" under Howey. The court said no, because there was no common enterprise. The SOL you put into a token's curve doesn't fund some shared venture that lifts every holder together when it succeeds. It's just a curve. You win by selling before the next guy, and the ones who buy in late lose when demand dries up. That's the OPPOSITE of everyone's fortunes rising and falling together, which is exactly what a common enterprise requires. Dismissed WITH prejudice on the two tokens the named plaintiffs actually held. THIS IS NOT ALL "memecoins aren't securities." It's that a memecoin with no real enterprise behind it isn't one. Different tokens, different facts, different answer. I cannot say again this does NOT mean all memecoins aren't securities.
Worth noting that Pumpfun is not completely off the hook.
The RICO claims survived against Baton and its three founders. The alleged "fair launch," per plaintiffs, was a "facade" aka insiders and paid influencers grabbing early positions while retail got told the field was even. That's pleaded as a pattern of wire fraud. The court also let through a claim that Pumpfun ran an unlicensed money-transmitting business through its smart contracts. Both now go to discovery.
The gambling theory, though? Completely dead. Trading memecoins, in the court's words, "chancy though it be, is not the placing of a bet." We love a spicy judge.
As stated earlier, Solana walked. Every claim against Solana Labs, the Foundation, and the named individuals got tossed. Building the rails something runs on isn't the same as running the scheme, and the court wouldn't infer that Solana knew about or signed onto any of it.
WORTH EMPHASIZING: not a security doesn't mean not illegal. The securities theory is dead, but the fraud theory is still alive against the company and its founders. Remember that this is a motion-to-dismiss ruling. NOTHING IS PROVEN. The court just found enough was plausibly alleged to move forward.
What happens next?
The case doesn't end, it just narrows. It's now a RICO case against Pumpfun's operator and its three founders, carried by two plaintiffs. Discovery is going to be a big one here. Plaintiffs already pried loose nearly 5,000 internal chat messages, and that's before formal discovery even opens.
The bigger hurdle down the road is class certification, which is a much steeper climb than surviving a motion to dismiss. The dead claims are mostly dead for good: securities and unjust enrichment went out with prejudice, Solana's gone, and none of it gets reviewed on appeal until there's a final judgment, IF ever. One near-term date to watch is Sept. 10, when plaintiffs have to explain why the 25 unnamed influencer "Doe" defendants shouldn't be dropped for never being served.
