You can double the size of a team without doubling its output. As a group gets larger, the average contribution per person can decline. The team might still produce more overall, but not in proportion to the extra people involved. In startup, we call it bloating, a system where everyone swears they’re handling too much and needs an assistant and the assistant also needs another executive later. The titles keep getting longer but not in correlation to the output. Be careful, and be guided. Or you’ll learn from experience.

Never assume someone is too big to advise you on your startup before trying. One of the most valuable things anyone can give you is information that helps you move forward. That’s why I value conversations with people who are genuinely willing to share what they know, guide others and support their growth. The man beside me is @AkinMoses1 , co-founder of @SycamoreNG. He and his co-founders started building the company in 2018 and launched it in 2019. Sycamore grew from a reported 50,000 users in 2023 to over 300,000 by June 2025, providing access to credit for individuals and thousands of Nigerian businesses. That is a lot of growth, experience and lessons to learn from. But beyond what he has built, I really admire his willingness to share the knowledge behind that journey. This was our first time meeting, at Sycamore’s new office in Victoria Island. @kunleadeoye_ was also there. I was there to greet someone whose willingness to share his knowledge publicly had made him a mentor to us all virtually. Adeoye was there to learn from a leader in the industry he is building in, and to get guidance that could help shape his own startup. Ten years from now, Adeoye may look back at that one hour as one of the conversations that gave him a clearer direction. Something Babatunde considers a simple piece of advice could become a cornerstone of how Adeoye builds his business. Sometimes, what feels like an ordinary conversation to you can be a turning point for someone else. My advice to anyone building is to find someone who has built in your industry and ask for a focused conversation. Come prepared with specific questions. Learn what they tried, what worked, what failed and what they would do differently. You do not have to learn every lesson through your own mistakes. And do not assume that someone is too accomplished or too busy to be approachable. People like Babatunde remind me that it is possible to build something significant and still make time to guide others. This is how we strengthen an ecosystem: by making sure the lessons from one person’s journey become useful to the next. Thank you, Babatunde, for being generous with your time and knowledge. I’ve been at the forefront of technical education in Africa for years now, and over the last 4 years, I’ve dedicated a large part of myself to making sure education goes beyond just certificates. Years ago, on September 27, 2020, @developerayo and I were coming back from Port Harcourt on a @flyairpeace flight. Our afternoon flight kept getting delayed until past 11 PM. We got into Lagos around midnight. We wanted to wait at the airport until 4 AM, but they still sent us out. On our way home, SARS arrested us because of the curfew, and we all ended up at the police station. Nigerian local airlines are really terrible because even though they kept delaying the flight, they were aware that there was a curfew in Lagos that started around midnight, but they didn’t care.

My goal here is simple: I want to change 3 major things about how university education works in Africa. 1. The time : The world is moving fast, but our education system still assumes everyone must learn at roughly the same pace. I don’t believe education should work that way. If you have the time, ability and discipline to dedicate more hours to your studies, you should be able to move faster. If life requires you to move slower, there should be room for that too. The focus should be on mastery, not simply how many years you spent in school. 2. The outcome : The goal of going to university shouldn’t just be to leave with a certificate. It should be to leave with knowledge, proof that you can apply that knowledge, and a clear path towards using it in the real world. Universities shouldn’t stop at teaching students. They should help students build, work on real projects, gain experience and ultimately turn what they’ve learned into opportunities. Education should lead somewhere. 3. The process : Education is not necessarily meant to be easy, but it should absolutely be worth it. And learning shouldn’t require putting the rest of your life on hold. You should be able to learn from wherever you are, structure learning around your life, interact with your peers and instructors, and still receive a rigorous university education. Not easier education. Better education. More flexible education. More practical education. That’s a big part of what we’re trying to build with the new AltSchool Degree. And yes, the Degree programmes are NUC accredited. We’ve spent the last few years rethinking how people learn skills. Now we’re taking on university education. Watch this space next month.

There’s a reason @Netlify is considered the best hosting platform globally right now, and it’s not just because it’s easy to use. It’s because Netlify is building with people-first in mind. As a core Netlify user and a Netlify Shipper member, I joined @AshAmplifies , who hosted a Netlify workshop in London last month with @charlierward at Ramen Space London. There was a mini hackathon there, and I used the opportunity to build a product using the recently launched Netlify AI Builder. My goal was to build something other builders would need, and it turned out to be a success. A simple platform that helps other Netlify user do a security and functionality test on their website, by doing over 70+ tests. Frontend, backend, authentication, and email were all handled by Netlify without me having to lift an extra finger. And I think this is just the beginning. @biilmann and @thisiskp_ still have a lot to show us. And I’m looking forward to it.

The first public project I did with @Tunde_OD and @SamuelOtigba was our Internship and SIWES program and I think we had over 50,000 people applied, we paired thousands of students to companies and got a lot of successful hires. Then we did the laptop support program in partnership with so many amazing individuals like @aproko_doctor , @Ace_KYD , @falzthebahdguy , @TemidayoOniosun , @ThankgodIzime , @Enioluwa , @itsboffin, @MaxitechGlobal and others and we gave out minimum of 5 laptops per round. Now this time, we’ve already put together a 250M Naira fund to support a particular set of Nigerians with their career. One of the most valuable things you can build in your career is discipline. Not just the discipline to show up every day, but the discipline to become so skilled at something that you can apply that skill across many different areas of life and work. When people think about careers, they often think in straight lines. You study something, get a job in that field, and stay within the boundaries of that profession. But the most interesting careers are usually built differently. A great example of this is my friend, @SamuelOtigba. Samuel is an exceptional designer, but what stands out to me is that he doesn’t limit design to a computer screen. He takes the principles of design everywhere. He designs digital experiences, but he also designs physical products like shoes, wears, sports, etc. He takes design to the streets through art and creative expression. He applies design thinking to workflows and systems. He sees opportunities to create, improve, and innovate in places where most people wouldn’t even think to look. What makes this possible isn’t talent alone. It’s discipline. It’s the discipline to master a craft deeply enough that the lessons from that craft become transferable. Once you reach that level, you’re no longer just a designer, engineer, marketer, or developer. You become a problem solver who can create value in many different environments. The people who build remarkable careers are often those who create multiple verticals from a single skill. They don’t abandon their profession. They expand it. They take what they’ve learned and apply it in new ways, opening doors that didn’t previously exist. I wish more people would approach their careers this way. Instead of asking, “What job can this skill get me?” ask, “How many opportunities can I create with this skill?” This is one of the ideas we try to encourage at @AltSchoolAfrica .
