If you ever believed Luigi's hands moved oddly smoothly in Luigi's Mansion, you were right: the game nearly always runs at 30 FPS except for cutscenes that are close-up shots of Luigi's hands, which are the only times the game renders gameplay at 60 FPS.

I’ll always think of RvB as the funny internet show I watched in 2003-2004 and then stopped caring about after I got to highschool, so it always gives me whiplash whenever I have to re-learn that it kept going for years and years afterwards as a CGI thing
rvb models are funny af because they look like diff characters in every scene 😭 girl who the hell ARE you

For anyone curious about what it actually looked like to kill a generation of functioning cars, here’s an actual video from 2009 and brief explanation: The dealer first replaces the oil with sodium silicate solution. It’s a clear-ish liquid that crystallizes under extreme heat. As the engine warms up the solution begins to form small abrasive crystals in the oil system that shred the bearing and score the cylinder walls. Within seconds of starting the car you can see smoke billowing from the exhaust, this is the crystals scratching the cylinder walls and leaving small grooves for oil and solution to leak past into the combustion chamber and ignite/evaporate, producing the white smoke. Pretty soon the entire crankcase is full of crystals and freshly shredded metal flakes, the engine seizes. It took about 40 seconds in this video. Some engines reportedly lasted up to 7 minutes, but all were destroyed. That strikes me as sort of sad in a way, like watching a great warrior slowly lose a heroic last stand. Now, this is the part that gets insanely wasteful. These cars were sent to federally approved recycling facilities where they had 180 days to sell the non-engine parts before they were required to prove that they had shred the entire thing into scrap steel. But, in talking to a guy who ran one such facility at the time, he typically just sent them straight to the crusher. The timeframes allotted weren’t long enough to dismantle all of the cars, and even if you could, the marginal prices of the parts was greatly diminished. You cannot sell 1000 transmissions when only 50 went bad that year, they became worthless. So just like that, in order to increase prosperity and save the environment, 677,000 entire running cars and trucks were turned directly into rebar worth a few cents per pound. The entire Obama administration was like a chapter out of atlas shrugged.
Barack Obama was horrible in a million different ways, but he doesn’t get anywhere near the hate he deserves for destroying the used car market for an entire generation. 15-year-old cars with 150,000 miles that should be selling for $3,000 are going for $15,000. It’s abominable. Pure destruction and thievery.

I get new technologies are often full of bad design choices that are way more obvious with hindsight, but it’s insane how many early tank designs had decisions like “we made the engine blow burning hot air directly onto the crew.”
The worst tank of WW2 might be one that never fired a shot in battle. Britain built more than 1,700 of them anyway. It was called the Covenanter. In 1939, Britain knew war was coming and it was short on tanks. So the Army ordered a new cruiser tank and did something reckless to save time. It ordered the thing into production straight off the drawing board. No prototype first. No testing. Just build it. And the company chosen to design it wasn't even a tank maker. It was a railway company, the London, Midland and Scottish. On paper, the Covenanter looked fine. It was fast, around 30 miles per hour. It sat very low to the ground, which made it harder to hit. It carried the standard British 2-pounder gun of the time. Then they actually started building and testing it. The engine was in the back, like most tanks. But to keep the tank's profile low, the designers put the radiators up front, next to the driver. That meant the engine coolant had to be piped all the way through the crew compartment, front to back. The result was a tank that cooked its own crew. The fighting compartment got brutally hot. And the cooling system still couldn't keep the engine from overheating. Not in the desert. In Britain. The Covenanter overheated in the cool, damp English countryside. Engineers tried fix after fix. Modified radiators. New louvers. New marks of the tank. None of them truly solved it. It had other issues too. It was cramped. Its armor was thin. Its 2-pounder gun was already falling behind German tanks. And its cooling problems made it useless for North Africa, the one place Britain actually needed tanks in 1941 and 1942. So the Army made a decision. The Covenanter would never be sent into combat as a battle tank. And the factories kept building them. Britain was desperate to keep tank production lines running, keep workers trained, and keep units equipped with something, anything, to practice on. Over 1,700 Covenanters rolled out of the factories. They spent the war in Britain as training tanks, driving around Salisbury Plain while other tanks went to fight. A handful of Covenanters did eventually see action, but not as tanks. Some had their turrets removed and were converted into bridgelayers. A few of those were used in Burma and in Europe to help other vehicles cross gaps and ditches. The tank that couldn't fight ended up as a bridge so other tanks could. Plenty of WW2 tanks were outgunned, outarmored, or obsolete. The Italians had tankettes so small they were nearly useless. The Japanese had tanks with barely an inch of armor. But all of those at least went to war. Britain built an entire fleet of tanks, more than many countries had in their whole army, and decided they weren't good enough to send.

There were four M41 tanks used in the film and they were all operated by the Belgian army with real training ammo (as opposed to fireworks in the barrels or mock-up tanks). A Belgian Army colonel admired Kubrick’s earlier works and lent him the tanks.
