“If my own children ask me in the future, ‘Should we become IAS?’ I will directly advise them, ‘Don’t become IAS’.” Sounds surprising coming from a senior IAS officer, doesn’t it? But Maharashtra’s IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe reportedly has a deeply personal reason behind this advice. In around 21 years of service, he has reportedly faced 25 transfers. Every move meant a new posting, a new city and another round of adjustments for his family. And the biggest cost was often borne by those waiting for him at home. His son had to change schools six times before reaching Class 5. Each transfer meant leaving behind familiar teachers, classmates and friendships, only to start again somewhere new. His wife, too, had to repeatedly reorganise her life around sudden transfers. Mundhe accepted these challenges as part of his professional journey. But he does not want his children to experience the same instability. Instead, he would prefer them to explore entrepreneurship or public leadership — careers that could allow them to contribute to society with greater independence. He has also encouraged Gen Z to look beyond conventional career paths, believing that young people have the knowledge, energy and ability to explore different opportunities. A 2005-batch IAS officer who secured AIR 20 in UPSC CSE 2004, Mundhe continues to serve the administration. In May 2026, he took charge as Maharashtra’s FDA Commissioner, where he has acted against food safety violations and illegal activities. His approach to governance remains firm: “Rules and regulations exist. We need an executive instrument to take them to stakeholders and implement them.” Yet his reported advice to his own children reveals another side of public service — the sacrifices that rarely appear in official records. 💭 For an officer, a transfer may be another government order. For a child, it can mean another school, another goodbye and another fresh start. #TukaramMundhe #IAS #IASOfficer #IndianBureaucracy #UPSC #CivilServices #PublicService #IndianMasterminds

Besides the domestic instability the frequent transfers indicate a falling lack of values and commitment to good governance by the top leadership thar is compromised and cannot afford laws to be implemented. Every transfer of a bundle doing his duty is a fall in standards

What were the reasons for those shifts? He would have received resistance from top and influential for his unshaken ethics to catch wrong doers. Sincerity has no place. If we have one person like him in every state, people life will be easier

The “sacrifices” rarely appear on official records because there’s rarely an IAS officer who works for public without taking bribes or trying to please politicians. It’s an unfortunate fact that 90% of IAS officers don’t deserve to remain in service but they continue to weaken this country for a luxurious life.

I'm a seasoned pro, a 3rd-generation officer in the forces, and my daughter is about to join me on this incredible journey. My kids have changed 8-9 schools. I haven't seen them growing, crawling, or taking their first steps. But still I pray to the Almighty that hopefully in my next life, I'll find myself back in the olives again. That's the difference and pride in uniform a fauji carries. 🫡🇮🇳

Being an army officer's wife getting posted every 2 years. My son too faced the same problem, adjusting school, especially getting friends making new friends all over again. By the time our children, join new school groups are already formed & they don't accept the new friends.

@Tukaram_IndIAS We need officers like you in this country.. They should definitely become IAS officers if they wish but they should be taught, how not to be afraid of any transfer or action and stick to the honesty and dedication despite immense pressure..

I come from a mil family. Whilst growing up, I studied in 7 schools and 3 colleges. Then I joined the forces and had 17 transfers in 24 years. There were consequential effects on my family. I would never tell anyone not to join the forces. Country above self and family - always.

That's the price you pay for honesty. Govt does not like IAS officers who probe deep into corruption inside & outside. The best weapon they have is to transfer them to a remote & insignificant posting, where he is a snake without its teeth.Capable IAS officers talent wasted. SOS🤞

We also experienced many transfers as my father was working in senior position in a Bank. State government jobs, bank, central government jobs have continuous transfers. Many times the wives have to sacrifice their careers.

We need officers like Mr. Tukaram Munde but we also need Politicians to be honest and think for society. Greed for power and business in the name of growth should not be the only agenda of ruling parties. Then officers like him may not get 25 transfers

They get these transfers, but none hv guts to object. Their kids suffer more in schooling. A new state, a new language for kid. Just imagine mental agony of the kids. Their IAS association is a joke who can not think abt mental wellness of their members.

I admire Tukaram, but capable and honest people should take IAS as their first choice. 1. If honest don’t enter that profession, corrupt will swamp it, 2. If an IAS’s wife would find it difficult to organise life after transfer, imagine the difficulties from other options.
